WEDNESDAY Night Febuary 6 2008 East Bay Winternationals

Speedy Dohm shakes off elbow injury

When Tim Dohm first realized his right elbow was bleeding Tuesday night, he feared that his broken driveshaft had come up through the car and struck his arm. Soon enough, though, the Cross Lanes, W.Va., driver realized the driveshaft didn't puncture the car's interior and he must've simply banged his elbow during his race-ending crash with Donnie Moran on the front
stretch at East Bay Raceway Park.

Dohm was more upset that the broken driveshaft robbed him of a golden chance to catch leader Don O'Neal in Tuesday's 30-lap feature at the third-mile oval where Dohm won last year. "I was so mad I couldn't feel anything anyway," the 47-year-old Dohm said.

Despite bandages on the elbow, Dohm's still bleeding the afternoon before the third round of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Dart Winternationals event. "Every time I move it keeps popping back open."

But an injury that might've taken a couple of stitches isn't going to keep Dohm from racing on the one-year anniversary of his 2007 victory at East Bay. "They said, 'Will it be too sore?' I said no, I'm going to be ready." Besides, he broke the elbow more than 20 years ago during his motorcycle racing career.

Dohm is traditionally fast at East Bay, and he's been right in the groove this year. He was the fastest overall qualifier in Monday's action and was stalking O'Neal on the 18th lap of the feature when his lost his driveshaft. "I was waiting for him to mess up or for us to catch some traffic," Dohm said.

Newcomers join Wednesday's action

Four-time UMP weekly champion Rodney Melvin of Logan, Ill., is among several newcoming drivers for Wednesday's Dart Winternationals action at East Bay. Melvin will pilot a No. 27 team car to Marion, Ill., driver Lee Thomason, who's also slated to be in action.

Other drivers expected to make their first 2008 starts at East Bay: Darren Miller of Chadwick, Ill.; John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va.; Bart Hartman of Zanesville, Ohio; Chris Hackett of Erie, Pa.; Kurt Owens of Newport, Tenn. (the older brother of Jimmy Owens, driving the Warrior Race Cars house car); and three-time Lucas Oil Series champion Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.

Long time away from home

Several teams traveled to East Bay after competing in an 11-day event at Golden Isles Speedway near Brunswick, Ga., meaning they're on their third week of action. Some have another week to go at Volusia Speedway Park near Daytona.

"This is too much," said Jeff Gullett, crew chief for Campbellsville, Ky., driver Justin Rattliff, who has a pair of top-five finishes at East Bay. The triop has been even longer and more exhausting for Rattliff's team, most of whom are good friends with another Kentucky driver, Michael England, whose father died of an apparent heart attack on Sunday night. The emotional roller coaster of racing and mourning has been difficult.

"It's been hard, I tell you," Gullett said. "Monday I didn't feel like doing nothing. I don't handle death well."

The younger England called Gullett and asked him to be a pallbearer at Friday's funeral, but Gullett doesn't have a way back to Kentucky. "I feel guilty about not going," the crew chief said. "If it wasn't for the Lucas Oil (series) points, we'd probably have gone on home."

On Wednesday afternoon, Gullett sat quietly on the back of Rattliff's hauler, quietly talking about his friend.

Gullett met David England, who was 48, four years ago, and the two became close friends who talked everyday about racing or anything else, "more than I talk to some of my family."

Gullett laughed when remember that England reufsed to call Gullett by by his first or last name. Instead, England tabbed him "Gullup." England's specialty at the track was doing the cooking for his son's and other teams, like the ribeye sandwich he brought to Gullett last week at Golden Isles. "He was always bringing something," Gullett said.

Barber's vision quest

Bryan Barber of Buffalo, Ky., qualified for his first-ever feature at East Bay on Tuesday night, but his chances at a good run quickly went awry. When Barber reached up to his helmet to pull off his first plastic tear-off, he accidentally grabbed all seven of the helmet shields.

"When I went to tear the next one off, there was nothing there," said the 29-year-old driver, who drives the No 10 for Scott Clippinger Racing. "From about lap three, I was guessing where I was going."

Barber ended up 23rd in the 25-car feature, but he's still getting comfortable at a track where drivers hang out the rear end of the car going through the turns. He's more accustomed to tracks where drivers keep the cars as straight as possible in maneuvering the corners.

"Here, you better not stay straight," said Barber, who made his first career start at East Bay on Monday night. "It's not really my cup of tea, but I'm getting adjusted to it."

Odds and ends

Highland, Ill., driver Randy Korte, who sprained his back in a wreck in Monday's feature, will continue to sit out Wednesday, car owner Gary Gerstner said. Korte was treated by a chiropractor earlier Wednesday. ...

Kentucky driver D.J. Wells, who broke motors in Sunday's practice as well as Monday's action, got a motor from Steve Francis and plans to compete Wednesday.

Miller atop point standings

Tuesday night winner Matt Miller of Whitehouse, Ohio, leads the Dart Winternationals point standings at East Bay. The miniseries carries $30,000 in cash and awards with $7,500 and a C.J. Rayburn Race Car going to the overall champion.
Miller has 605 points to lead Don O'Neal (565), Steve Francis (540) and Justin Rattliff (535). The points are tabulated from the six nights of racing at East Bay, along with carryover points from Golden Isles Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing IV (the final standings from Golden Isles, won by Jimmy Owens, count as an additional race in the Winternationals points).
Each of the top 10 drivers competed at Golden Isles. Through Tuesday, 127 drivers total competed at both tracks.

Re: WEDNESDAY Night Febuary 6 2008 East Bay Winternationals

Pre-race notebook

The 74 entrants was the most of the week. ...

Tim Dohm, Monday's fast qualifier, rolled out for his time but lost power before taking the green flag. His car was pushed to the infield. ...

Newcomers for Wednesday night's action: Earl Pearson Jr., Darren Miller, Bart Hartman, Jason Riggs, Rodney Melvin and Kurt Owens (in the Warrior Race Cars house car)

Qualifying

Tuesday night's feature winner Matt Miller staked an early claim to Wednesday's big money by setting fast time before the third round of East Bay Raceway Park's Dart Winternationals. Miller posted a time of 14.838 seconds at the third-mile oval near Tampa. Other drivers fastest in their respective groups in the group qualifying system used this week by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series: Terry Casey (14.844) of New London, Wis.; Steve Shaver (15.052) of Vienna, W.Va.; Ray Cook (15.124) of Brasstown, N.C.; Chris Wall (15.047) of Holden, La.; and a surprising Jason McBride (14.931) of Carbondale, Ill., who transferred to his first-ever feature at East Bay the previous night.
"The car's just been awesome," Miller said after setting fast time for the second straight night. "The driver made a little error in qualifying, so I'm surprised that (time) stood up." Miller spun a "1" on the PRC wheel for the second straight night, meaning heat races will start straight up with each group's fastest qualifier on the poles of the 10-lap prelims.

HEAT RACES FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT

First heat

Steve Francis outran fast qualifier Matt Miller on the first lap and raced away to a 10-lap victory. Third-starting Billy Moyer dropped Miller to third on the second lap and held the second spot the rest of the way. Miller couldn't keep up with the frontrunners, falling nearly a straightaway behind midway through the race but maintaining the third and final transfer spot over Scott James. Donnie Moran finished fifth, Shannon Babb sixth and fourth-starting Bart Hartman seventh in a stacked heat race. Moran nearly got out of shape in the final turn, but survived to hold off Babb.

Finish:

(1) Steve Francis, (2) Billy Moyer, (3) Matt Miller, (4) Scott James, (5) Donnie Moran, (6) Shannon Babb, (7) Bart Hartman, (8) Josh McGuire, (9) Eric Wells, (10) Joe Denby, (11) Jeff Beyers.

Second heat

Polesitter Terry Casey got out by himself early and pulled away for an easy 10-lap victory. Eric Jacobsen ran second nine laps, but when he was caught up behind the slower car of Anthony Ferguson on the final lap, Earl Pearson Jr. swept around to grab the second spot. Pearson, too, was held up behind Ferguson as the pursuers stacked up behind him. Jacobsen held on to third, finishing just ahead of an onrushing Damon Eller.

Finish:

(1) Terry Casey, (2) Earl Pearson Jr., (3) Eric Jacobsen, (4) Damon Eller, (5) Justin Rattliff, (6) Steve Casebolt, (7) Ky Harper, (8) Marshall Austin Jr., (9) Mark Andersen, (10) Anthony Ferguson, (11) Danny Mitchell. Scratch: Tyler Ivey

Third heat

Unheralded Jason McBride won from the pole as he outran Dave Tyrchniewicz for his first East Bay heat race victory. Kevin Cole outdueled Chuck Harper to earn the third and final transfer spot while Dennis Erb Jr., struggling for the second straight night, finished fifth ahead of Tim Dohm, who started on the tail in a backup car after breaking during time trials. The only caution appeared on the seventh lap when Bob Geiger turned around inside turn two.

Finish:

(1) Jason McBride, (2) Dave Tyrchniewicz, (3) Kevin Cole, (4) Chuck Harper, (5) Dennis Erb J., (6) Tim Dohm, (7) Billy Drake, (8) Bob Geiger, (9) Jared Hawkins, (10) Doug Blashe, (11) Danny Johnson. Scratch: Tyler Boggs.

Fourth heat

Terry English won a groove-swapping, lead-swapping duel with polesitter Chris Wall over the first three laps and pulled away for a victory. Wall, second on a lap-three restart, got too high in turns one and two and allowed Bryan Collins and Doug Horton to slip underneath. Wall tried to claw back into a transfer position, but Collins and Horton held on to earn their first feature starts of the week. Rodney Melvin ended up fifth, never in the mix up front. The lone caution appeared on the third lap for debris and sixth-starting Clint Smith pulled off during the yellow.

Finish:

(1) Terry English, (2) Bryan Collins, (3) Doug Horton, (4) Chris Wall, (5) Rodney Melvin, (6) Tim Fuller, (7) Jeep Van Wormer, (8) Brian Shirley, (9) Jackie Bogg, (10) Bryan Barber, (11) Clint Smith. Scratch: Russ Adams.

Fifth heat

Dan Schlieper won an early battle with polesitter and fellow front-row starter Steve Shaver in the early laps and raced to a 10-lap victory. Shaver settled for second while fourth-starting Mike Marlar ran third throughout the race. Wayne Chinn got within striking distance of Marlar a few times but lost two spots on the eighth lap, moving Vic Coffey up to finish fourth. Third-starting Dan Stone faded from contention early and ended up eighth. Two cautions slowed the action. Donald Beyers was turned around on the backstretch on the seventh lap and Anthony White spun in turn two on the lap-seven restart.

Finish:

(1) Dan Schlieper, (2) Steve Shaver, (3) Mike Marlar, (4) Vic Coffey, (5) Wayne Chinn, (6) Rohn Moon, (7) Shon Flanary, (8) Dan Stone, (9) Kellen Chadwick, (10) Donald Beyers, (11) Tim Lance, (12) Kurt Owens, (13) Anthony White.

Sixth heat

Josh Richards, starting outside the front row, led all the way while third-starting Don O'Neal grabbed the second transfer spot. Polesitter Ray Cook dropped from second to fifth through the middle stages and Rick Eckert got the third and final transfer spot. Darren Miller took a shot at Eckert in the closing laps but settled for fourth. A lap-eight caution came out when Eddie Carrier Jr. stopped in turn four after some rough-riding in the high groove. Austin Hubbard spun in turn four to bring out a lap-three caution. A lap-one caution appeared when Tim McCreadie spun in turn two, requiring a complete restart. McCreadie was pushed off the track. Late-comer Wendell Wallace tagged the tail and used the heat race as a hot-lap session in his first 2008 appearance at East Bay in the GRT house car.

Finish:

(1) Josh Richards, (2) Don O'Neal, (3) Rick Eckert, (4) Darren Miller, (5) Ray Cook, (6) John Blankenship, (7) Wendell Wallace, (8) Jim Borden, (9) Eddie Carrier Jr., (10) Austin Hubbard, (11) Tim McCreadie.

************************************************** *******************************

B - MAINS

First consolation

Donnie Moran, inheriting the point when race-long leader Scott James lost power in a plume of turn-three smoke, led the last three of 12 laps for a victory. Moran, who was in a feisty battle for the second spot while James led, nearly fell to third before a lap-nine caution, but the yellow negated Bart Hartman's pass. Hartman restarted second on the lap-nine restart, but he faltered exiting turn two on the 10th lap, allowing Shannon Babb and then Justin Rattliff past. Babb went on to finish second ahead of Rattliff while Hartman settled for fourth. Front-row starter Damon Eller swapped the second spot with Moran twice in the early laps, but he fell back as far as sixth and never contended in the second half of the race. Four cautions slowed the action, none for major incidents.

Finish:

(1) Donnie Moran, (2) Shannon Babb, (3) Justin Rattliff, (4) Bart Hartman, (5) Damon Eller, (6) Eric Wells, (7) Ky Harper, (8) Mark Andersen, (9) Marshall Austin Jr., (10) Joe Denby, (11) Danny Mitchell.

Second consolation

Dennis Erb Jr., inheriting the lead when Chuck Harper was penalized for a bad restart, led the final nine laps to transfer to the feature. Harper was left to battle with fellow West Virginian Tim Dohm, who was trying to rebound in his backup car after missing time trials altogether. Dohm pulled nearly alongside twice in the final laps, but couldn't complete the pass. A turn-four scramble that included Jeep Van Wormer, Bryan Barber, Jackie Boggs and Doug Blashe brought out the race's first caution on lap two. Jared Hawkins spun in turn four on the third lap (triggering spins by Brian Shirley and Bob Geiger) for another caution and Brian Shirley slowed in turn two on the sixth lap for yet another yellow.

Finish:

(1) Dennis Erb Jr., (2) Chuck Harper, (3) Tim Dohm, (4) Tim Fuller, (5) Chris Wall, (6) Rodney Melvin, (7) Danny Johnson, (8) Billy Drake.

Third consolation

In a three-car battle for the lead after a lap-four restart, Darren Miller fought off challenges from Ray Cook and Wayne Chinn and went on to a victory for his first feature start at East Bay since 2006. Miller dominated early in the race, but he was suddenly vulnerable on the first restart. Cook took the lead on the sixth lap, but after Miller regained the point a lap later, Cook slipped high in turn two and got into the wall to draw a caution. Miller led comfortably after the lap-eight restart while Chinn got the final transfer spot. Eddie Carrier Jr. and Rohn Moon were battling for the third spot when Carrier got into Moon entering turn three on the 10th lap. Carrier spun into the infield while Moon was sent into the outside wall. Dan Stone, who started deep in the field, was third after his last-ditch challenge of Chinn fell short. A lap-four caution appeared when Kellen Chadwick and Shon Flanary got together exiting turn two.

Finish:

(1) Darren Miller, (2) Wayne Chinn, (3) Dan Stone, (4) John Blankenship, (5) Austin Hubbard, (6) Tim Lance, (7) Kurt Owens, (8) Jim Borden.

************************************************** ******************
Non-qualifiers' race

Tim Dohm won a caution-plagued Strawberry Dash to earn the 25th starting spot in the feature. Dohm, who went to his backup car after blowing a motor as he pulled on the track for time trials, led all the way to outrun Ray Cook.

Finish:

(1) Tim Dohm, (2) Ray Cook, (3) Chris Wall, (4) Eric Wells, (5) Joe Denby.

Moyer earns 16th career East Bay win

Rebounding after failing to make Tuesday night's feature, Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., took the lead from Terry Casey on the 23rd lap and cruised to his career-leading 16th victory at East Bay Raceway Park. Moyer earned $5,000 for winning the third round of the Dart Winternationals.

Moyer and Casey, who took the lead from polesitter Dan Schlieper, had an exciting duel just past the midpoint of the race. Moyer nearly got around Casey when the crossed under the flagstand at the 20th lap. A lap later, Moyer was poised to complete the move when Casey made contact as they crossed the start-finish line.

Casey got sideways in turn three on the 22nd lap, and Moyer regained his momentum to charge around Casey on the 23rd lap. Moyer began pulling away and was all alone when everything went wrong for Casey on lap 27. Casey, who had moved up to the high groove, got together with the slower car of Wayne Chinn and spun in turn two.
Moyer restarted with another Wisconsin driver, Dan Schlieper, hot on his heels for a three-lap shootout, but Schlieper couldn't get within striking distance in the final laps
Schlieper ended up second with Don O'Neal third. Matt Miller, last night's winner, and Josh Richards rounded out the top five. The finishes are unofficial.

The race was slowed by five cautions, none for serious incidents.

Lucas Oil Series competition continues at the Dart Winternationals with a $7,000-to-win event on Thursday night, the first night of points competition on the series. The week wraps up with $10,000-to-win and $12,000-to-win events on Friday and Saturday.
