Questons about ford 9" semi floater axles?
O.k. I know very little about fords worked on chevys for years and know a little about quick changes and had a 9" floater before. Now for the questions
I have 2 for rear ends for a race car that are stock type semi floater 9" and am wondering if a ford guru could inform mr on some things. The center ends of the axles like were a "center cap" on a street car would cover up are different. Both are described like you just bent over and looked at the face of the hub.
Axle #1 is round on the outside and has a reces in the center kind of like a diagonal box with rounded edges, this is a 28 spline.--I told this car had stock axles from a 68 galaxy 500
Axle #2 has axles that the ceneter part is round on the outside and has 3 holes drilled in it. One 7/16ish hole drilled about 7/16" deep one near the outside endge then a small one that almost looks like someone knocked the smell out of it with a big hammer and a big center punch in the cenetr then another large 7/16"ish hole on the other side. It almost looks like you could put tool with 2 progs on it like you use on some grinders to the put into the holes and turn the axle for some reason. -- I believe these are some kind of aftermarket axles.
The 28 spline is in a car we plan to run and I was wondering if someone could let me know some junkyard hunting tips other than knowing you total length backing plate to backing plate measure junkyard car if correct pull axle make sure it is correct spline and bearing size, if not put it back together and move onto the next possible car. Also do you have to use a slide hammer to pull the axles or will they just slide out after you take out the bolts on a 30 year old car? Thanks for any help guys.
