ERIC ERWIN CAPTURES CAREER FIRST MODIFIED WIN AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Saluda, VA – Eric Erwin of Beaver Dam, VA, who started fifth, used a strong run on the high side to take home his career first Budweiser Modified victory at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway and in the process became the division’s eighth different winner.

Erwin powered his #50 SBR Graphics Warrior to the outside of leader Renee Weeks on lap 15 as the two exited turn 2 and battled side by side until lap 16 before taking the lead out of turn 4. Following Erwin to second was Bret Hamilton as Weeks fell back to third.

On lap 18 Hamilton took a peak inside of Erwin as the two exited turn 4 but Erwin held the spot by inches at the line. A caution for a wreck in turn 4 brought the field back single file behind the leader Erwin. On the restart Erwin had Hamilton looking back inside, for the next two laps Hamilton worked to get to the inside of Erwin until another caution for a wreck on the front stretch slowed the field once again.

On the restart Hamilton dove to the inside of Erwin for the lead as Mark Schools went to the outside of Weeks for third. Schools made the pass for third as Erwin and Hamilton raced back to the white flag side by side. Erwin got a great bite off of turn 2 and pulled a car length on Hamilton. It was all Erwin needed as he held off Hamilton at the line for his career first Modified victory.

“The high side was the place to be, my car just worked butter up there,” Erwin said. “It was a little slick in turns 3 and 4 but I got a good bite in turn 2 to get past Renee (Weeks) for the lead and then the battle with Bret (Hamilton) was just awesome,” added Erwin on his first victory.

Rounding out the top five were Page Harrison, Mark Schools and Brent Bordeaux. Brian Dobie set fast time in “Hot Lap” Time Trials and inverted the top four positions. Russ Grady picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his twelfth place finish.

In other action Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen, VA led flag to flag in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature to pick up his fourth win of the season, and John Mosby of Doswell, VA pulled off the rare two win night with victory’s in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature and the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Bobby Bustamante set fast time in “Hot lap” Time Trials and inverted the top four with the pill draw. That put Tim Shelton and Roger Jamerson on the front row leading the filed to green in the 30-lap feature. Jamerson took the lead from the outside with Shelton tucked under his back bumper.

With Jamerson in control, the battle on the track was for second between Shelton, Bustamante and Walker Arthur. Jamerson held a five car length advantage as Shelton continued to hold off Bustamante for second.

The only thing to slow Jamerson during the race was cautions. On each restart Jamerson would have to hold off Shelton for a corner before pulling back to a comfortable advantage. As the laps wound down Jamerson got stronger and motored away for his fourth win of the season.

“The car was just flawless tonight,” said Jamerson. “If I can have a car like this every week I don’t mind starting eighth,” added Jamreson when asked about the two win rule.

Rounding out the top five were Tim Shelton, Bobby Bustamante who took over the points lead, Jerry Scott and Vaughan Haywood. Davis Lipscombe picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his sixth place finish.

It took two starts to get the Dixie Chopper All American underway but once they got racing in the 15 lap feature Ronnie Keith of Wilmington, NC took control, until John Mosby of Doswell, VA joined in on the battle. Mosby won his heat but because of the track’s two win rule had to start eighth. With Keith in control up front Mosby began to pick his way to the front.

Caution fell on lap 9 for a wreck between Johnny Brooks and Charles Spence in turn 1. On the restart Mosby pulled inside Keith out of turn 2. The two raced side by side until lap 10 when Mosby took control for good out of turn 4. On lap 12 Marty Coltrain went inside of Keith for second as Mosby pulled away. Mosby kept his advantage over Coltrain and took home his sixth win of the season and fourth in a row.

“It’s getting harder and harder every week, I just have to thank my dad and Buck Cunningham for providing me with such a great car,” said Mosby. Mosby will once again not get to start any closer than eighth with the tracks two win rule. Rounding out the top five were Marty Coltrain, nineteenth starting Bret Adkins, Ronnie Keith and eleventh starting Dustin Owens.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature John Imler and Frank Addington led the field to green with Imler winning the drag race into turn 1 followed closely by points leader Charles Evelyn. On lap 4 Evelyn inside of Imler out of turn 2 and finished the pass for the lead out of turn 4. Heading into turn 1 Imler went back around the outside of Evelyn to regain the lead.

Evelyn kept pressing the issue and went back inside Imler in turn 3 to retake the lead out of turn 4. Following Evelyn to the inside of Imler was John Mosby. Imler and Mosby battled side by side for the next three laps with Evelyn just ahead in the lead. On lap 10 Mosby completed the pass on Imler out of turn 2 and went straight to the lead on the backstretch.

Mosby began to stretch out his lead as Imler came under attack by eighth starting keith Hubbard for second. With two to go Hubbard managed to get by Imler for second but couldn’t reel in Mosby. Mosby would cross the line comfortably ahead of Hubbard for his second win of the night.

“I don’t know what to say, this is just incredible, I know that these guys are running for points so I tried to run them clean, it was just a great race,” commented Mosby on his rare two win night.

Rounding out the top five were Keith Hubbard, John Imler, Charles Evelyn and Bob Terry. Mark Wright picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his seventh place finish.
