Randy Taylor in Victory Lane after the last lap battle with Chase McCormick
RURAL RETREAT, VA – For double points night at Wythe Raceway, both the Pro Late Model field and Super Late Model fields were lined up by qualifying times without any inversion. This lineup put Chase McCormick on the pole in the Pro Late Model division and his father Jimmy McCormick on the pole in the Super Late Model division.
Chase McCormick, a rookie and a mere fifteen years old was sitting second in points in the Pro Crate Late Model division, and his father Jimmy leading the points in the Super Late Model division going into Saturday’s double points night. The McCormick’s out of Dobson, NC have made Wytheville their home track this year and have won many fans by their kind manners both on and off of the racetrack.
Chase McCormick led the Pro Late Model field to the drop of the green followed by Randy Taylor of Troutdale, VA and Aaron Bowen of Mt. Airy, NC. By the completion of the third lap, McCormick had stretched his lead over the field by four car lengths as he rounded turns one and two. With ten laps in the books, Greg Burchett who started in the fifth place position took the low line under Bowen to make the pass for third across the line.
A late race caution collected several cars in turn four including Scott Agee, Trevor Agee, Barry Arnold and Tate Hughs. On the restart McCormick led the field to the green followed by Taylor, Burchett, Bowen and Jack Scott. McCormick again jumped to an early two car length lead over Taylor. Going down the back straight Taylor closed the gap and the two emerged from turn four side by side. McCormick held the low line with Taylor taking the high line. Down the front stretch, Taylor gave McCormick a side bump, sending him toward the inside wall and giving Taylor the lead. McCormick held onto his car enough to maintain second. Taylor went on to lead the last lap and take the checkered in the Pro Crate Late Model Division. Following Taylor to the line were McCormick, Burchett, Bowen and Scott.
In post race interviews, Taylor summed up his last lap pass by saying “Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to win. I’m here to win races”. The Pro Late Models won’t collect any points next week as the FASTRAK touring series rolls into town. Look for Wythe Raceway regulars to be going head to head to take home the $2000 grand prize.
In the Super Late Model division, Jimmy McCormick secured the pole position by turning the quickest lap in qualifying. Following McCormick to the green were Lloyd Osborne of Johnson Ciy, TN and Ryan Brewer of Wytheville, VA. Following his son’s early lead, McCormick pulled to a three car length lead over the pack by the end of the third lap, leaving Osborne and Brewer to battle for second. Kenny Peeples Jr., the only repeat winner this season started in the fifth place position, but quickly began making his move toward the front. By the end of the fourth lap he made the pass on Brewer to move into third.
At the halfway point, Osborne got a nose under McCormick but the hard charge got Osborne loose and opened the door for Peeples to get under and take over second. Peeples would make a late race charge on McCormick, but was unable to make the pass as McCormick took the checkered for his second feature Super Late Model win of the season. Following McCormick to the line were Peeples, Osborne, Wayne Hughes and last week’s winner Chris Meadows the young rookie of Crab Orchard, WV.
