RURAL RETREAT, VA – The Pro Late Model division on Saturday was a stacked field with some of the best drivers around lined up for the weekly event. On the first lap Greg Burchett of Church Hill, TN in the 17 and Max Meadows’ Barry Arnold got tangled going into turn four a created a multi car pile-up behind. On the restart another caution in turn two claimed another pack of cars. On the third restart, 18 cars were lined up and ready to race.

Rural Retreat’s Brandon Umberger in the 12 car immediately began to challenge Roberts for the lead. Umberger made brief contact with Roberts causing him to drop back. Umberger again charged back for the lead, but engine problems caused him to pull into the pits and leave the race. With just five laps to go, Shane Roberts out of Bluff City, TN and Chase McCormick out of Dobson, NC made contact which brought out another caution and took both of their cars out of the race.

On the restart, Dave Burks out of Abingdon in the B1 led the field to the green followed by the 94 of Randy Taylor out of Troutdale and the 49 of Jack Scott also from Troutdale. Burks went on to take the checkered for his first Pro Late Model Victory this season. Scott crossed the line in second and Scott Agee from Christiansburg made the pass on Taylor to take third.

In the Super Late Model division, Marion’s Travis Greer in the 11g led the field to the drop of the green followed by the 22 of Kenny Peeples out of Rural Retreat, and the 11 of Lloyd Osborne out of Johnson City, TN. Before the completion of the first lap the caution was brought out after a five car pileup in turns three and four. On the restart, Greer led the field around and began to get pressure from behind by Peeples. By the completion of the first lap, Peeples emerged as the new race leader.

Peeples went on to lead every lap to claim his first Super Late Model Victory of the season. Five Super Late Model weekly races have been run and each week a different winner has taken the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five were Greer, Wytheville’s Ryan Brewer, Osborne and Jimmy McCormick out of Dobson, NC.

In the Super Street division, Brian Hayes out of Troutdale led the field to the drop of the green followed by Dale Sutphin of Max Meadows, Jimmy Tate of Wytheville, Noah Martin of Sugar Grove and Mike Keith of Abingdon. Before the completion of the first lap, Hayes in his number 25 spun in turn one which brought out the first caution and set up the field for a complete restart. By the third lap, Sutphin had moved into the lead followed by Tate, Keith, Griffitts and the 5 car of Brian Coake out of Max Meadows. Griffitts and Coake team up to both make the pass on Keith to take over third and fourth. Once again on lap six, Griffitts passes Tate on the outside with Coake right on his bumper. The two clear Tate taking over the second and third place positions.

With ten laps to go, a three car battle for the lead began. Sutphin drove as hard as he could to keep Griffitts and Coake in his rear view mirror. Coake was able to make the pass on Griffitts for second with five laps to go shuffling Sutphin into second and leaving Griffitts in third. Coake got a nose under Sutphin with four laps to go and emerged out of turn four as the new race leader. Griffitts wanting to take the lead passed Sutphin on the next lap and went to work on Coake. Tate who had dropped back into fourth was also able to make the pass on Sutphin to regain the third place position. Coake went on to claim the Super Street victory. Following him to the checkered were Griffitts, Tate, Sutphin and Keith.

In the Open Wheel Modified division, Daniel Lyles out of Marion led the field to the drop of the green followed by RK Dix of Rural Retreat, Mike Johnson of Marion, Chris Pendleton of Morristown, TN and Ron Lawson of Austinville. Just as the racing was heating up, Lawson who had dropped back to sixth, made contact with Wytheville’s Will Ferguson which brought out an early caution.

On the restart, Pendleton restarted in second, but was able to take the lead by the completion of the lap. Pendleton was able to stretch his lead while Dix, Lyles, Lawson and Meadowview’s Duke Bare all battled for second. A great move by Bare as he cut between Lyles and Dix put him up to second allowing him a chance to battle with Pendleton. A timely caution just before the last lap set the field for a one lap shootout finish. Pendleton who still held onto the lead had Bare in his rearview on the restart. Pendleton was able to hold onto the lead to claim his fourth Open Wheel Modified victory this season. Bare crossed the line in second, followed by Dix, Lawson and Daniel Lyles.

In the Modified Mini/Truck division Brandon Farris out of Marion started on the pole followed by Gary Rudolph of Fries and Luke Golding of Mount Airy. Randy Kincer of Rural Retreat started back in the fifth place position. Kincer battle up to the front and took the lead away from Golding with just five laps to go. Kincer went on to take the checkered to claim his 102nd career victory. Golding crossed the line in second and Kevin Atwell of Rural Retreat finished third.

In the Hornet division Opal Davis out of Atkins started on the pole followed by Jake Eaton of Bland, Cody McMahan of Chilhowie and Nicole Reedy of Marion. Before the completion of the first lap, a wreck between turns 1 and 2 claimed 5 cars including Davis, the leader. On the restart, Eaton led the field to the green. Cody Dutton of Chilhowie pulled to an early lead followed by McMahan. The two battle for the lead position, until Dutton pulls into the pits with car trouble. McMahan went on to claim his 3rd feature win this season. Taylor Hayes of Marion crossed the line in second followed by Eaton and Pie Short of Abingdon.

In the Mini Stock division, Michael Carnett of Sugar Grove scored back to back wins after taking the checkered this Saturday night. Following Carnett to the line was Gator Cornett also of Sugar Grove and John Carlin of Chilhowie.

yeah it is called being hooked up. Like i said it is the setup. because on that track sat. about the only thing that would have help was traction control. And i do not think he has that because i could see him spining the tires.

If you make power and get it to the dirt without spinning the tires, find the right line, start near the front, pass for the lead and hold a good consistent lap after that, pass over the scales at the right weight along with a few other small inspected rules the win stands, hope to see more and more Super Lates come take the flag in the next few weeks
