RURAL RETREAT, VA – The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Touring Series roared into Wythe Raceway this past Saturday night for another action filled night of racing. Thirty six cars registered for the $4,000 to win 40 lap shootout event. The top 15 cars were locked into the field from qualifying and the remaining spots were filled from heat races and provisional positions.

Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin, the fastest qualifier opted to start from the outside pole position, putting the 3 of David Dick to the inside. Starting in row number 2 were the H1 of Billy Hicks and the 11 of David Smith. With the drop of the green, Rambo pulled to an early lead over the field, leaving the other cars to battle for position.

The drivers didn’t take long to heat up the action as battles for position pushed the cars three and even four wide going down the back stretch and into the turns. At the halfway point, Rambo still held to the lead followed by Hicks, and the 99 of Jeff Cook who pulled up to third.

With just five laps to go, Cook knew he had just a few more laps to get under Hicks to take way the second place position. As the white flag dropped signaling to the drivers one more to go, Cook tried the low line for the pass, but Hicks held him off crossing the line in second followed by Cook in third. This marked Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin’s first Carolina Clash Victory at Wythe Raceway. Rounding out the top five were the 1W of Ricky Weeks and the 70 of Jeff Smith.

In the Super Street division, Wytheville’s Brian Moore led the field to the green in his number 34, with last week’s feature winner Brian Coake back in seventh. As the field rounded one and two, cars darted three and four wide, and somehow all made it through the turn without spinning. By the completion of the first lap, Coake in the number 5 worked his way through traffic into the third place position.

With just three laps in the books, Coake went for a spin in turn two bringing out the first caution of the night and sending him to the rear of the field for the restart. Leading the field to the green was the 80 of Mike Keith followed by the 40 of Keith Griffitts, the 6 of Jimmy Tate and the 45 of Noah Martin. It didn’t take long for Griffitts to make his move as he darted to the inside. With just ten laps to go, Coake re-emerged into the top five after battling his way back up through the field of cars. With five to go, Coake takes the low line under Martin to take away the fourth place position.

Griffitts and Keith still raced side by side going into three and four with two laps to go. Griffitts took the lead across the line to take the lead with one lap to go. Coake, now in fourth got a nose under the 6 of Tate for third, but Tate was able to hold him off as the cars crossed the line. Griffitts claimed his first feature win of the season, followed by Keith, Tate, Coake and Martin rounding out the top five.

In the Open Wheel Modified division, Daniel Lyles out of Marion led the field to the drop of the green followed by the 17 of R.K. Dix, the 08 of Ron Lawson and the 83 of Ron Lyles. Chris Pendleton who crashed during hot laps last week started his number 15 at the tail end of the field.

Dix quickly passed Lyles to take the lead by the end of the first lap. Further back in the field, the 5 of Michael Davis and the 09 of Duke Bare made contact coming out of turn four, which sent Bare for a wild spin down the front stretch. On the restart, Dix still held the lead followed by D. Lyles, R. Lyles and Pendleton. Pendleton started picking off the leaders one by one as he charged toward the front. At the halfway point, Pendleton made the pass on Dix to emerge as the new race leader.

With just five laps to go, Davis who was involved in an earlier caution, made contact with Dix while racing for second. Dix held onto his car, but Davis spun and collected five other cars in the wreck. For the green, white, checkered finish, Pendleton held the lead followed by Dix and Lawson who had quietly maneuvered his way to the front. Lawson, with one to go was able to get a nose under Dix to take over second as the Pendleton took the checkered to claim the victory.

In the Mini Stock division, Nicholas Cole started on the pole position in his number 63, but slowed during the race sending him out of top five contention. Michael Carnett in the number 38 took over the lead after Cole slowed and held on to take his first victory of the season. After 8 cautions, the checkered was brought out on lap 11. Finishing behind Carnett were the 1 of Gator Cornett, the 06 of John Hayden and the 25 of Andy Jolliffe.

In the Modified Mini and Truck division, Chris Burnett led every lap to claim the overall victory. Randy Kincer who started in fifth worked his way up to second following Burnett to the line in his number 2. Jimmy Buchanan in the 28 truck has taken the truck win every night, but it was new comer Darrin King who claimed the victory Saturday night. Kevin Atwell crossed the line in third and Luke Golding finished fourth.

The hornet division saw plenty of excitement Saturday night. Cole Dutton in the number 1 started on the pole followed by the 07 of Tyler Croson, the 29 of Jake Eaton and Pie Short in the 52. As the green flag dropped, Cody Dutton in the 5 car who started back in fifth raced his way all the way up to the front to take the lead by the end. Following Dutton to the front was last weeks winner Cody McMahan in the number 34. McMahan and Dutton raced side by side for the lead. With one to go, McMahan has the lead, but begins to slow. Dutton took the checkered followed by the 16 of Taylor Hayes, the 77 of Michelle McMahan and brother Cole Dutton in the 1.

I was glad that he won.

I have met Dennis and Dawn several times and they are very nice people.

I have also been to Rambo's shop, just down the road from Cherokee Speedway and they treated me better than my own family.

He's not married. Dawn is his Gf. I believe that she was married to Chris Madden at one time. Now Chris and Dennis are no longer friends.

Rambo also won last night at Carolina Speedway - Gastonia NC...
