RURAL RETREAT, VA – Shane Roberts the 2005 Crate National Champion had a rough weekend this past Saturday at Wythe Raceway. Roberts, who claimed the pole position last week for the $2,000 to win feature, broke loose in turn four and ended up in the guardrail before the completion of the first lap.
On the restart, the 19 of Bobby Mayes lead the field of cars to the green flag followed by the 17 of Greg Burchett, the 12 of Brandon Umberger, the 44 of Shannon Buckingham and the B1 of Dave Burks. Once again, before the completion of the first lap, the 23 driven by Mark Berry spun in turn four at the same time the leaders piled up as they entered turn one. Burks and Umberger made contact up front with the C12 of Chris Carlson out of Greenfield, WI. Also getting collected in the wreck were local drivers Jack Scott, Jackie Cook, and Randy Taylor.
Once again, the field was lined up double file for another complete restart. When the green flag dropped, Chase McCormick out of Dobson, NC, seemed to have a miss, when he began to get shuffled back through the field. McCormick dropped back to twelfth, when he found another local driver in the number 99, David Wikle. The two paired up for a few laps and gained back a couple of positions each.
New comer Marty Reid and local driver Brian Woodward made contact coming out of turn four while battling for the ninth place position. Woodward hung on to his number 18 long enough to hold his position until the caution came out. On the restart, Mayes led the field to the green followed by Buckingham, Burchett, Umberger and Burks.
With just nine laps in the books, the 77 car driven by Scott Agee slowed on the front stretch. In an attempt not to run over the number 77, cars went high and low but inevitably still piled up going into turn one. In total, 6 cars were collected in the wreck. Randy Harmon in the number 94 was able to make it back out. However the 0 of Brandon McClure, 6 of Randall Hutcherson, 11c of Chris Comer, 15 of Barry Arnold and 22c of Tate Hughes were not as fortunate.
On the restart, Jeff Hunter in the 27h out of Jacksonville, FL, tried to get a big jump by passing 5 cars on the inside before the green flag dropped. He got his answer on what other drivers thought of the maneuver when the number 18 of Woodward gave him a courtesy tap and sent him for a spin in turn 4. Once again, the field was restarted with Mayes leading Buckingham, Burchett, Umberger and Burks to the line.
With thirty laps complete, Carlson who had been lying back patiently began to make his move to the front. Burks had been holding off the 22 of Peeples and in doing so, allowed Carlson to catch the battling pair. The three cars battled back and forth for the fifth place position. Umberger in his 12 machine had quietly been waiting to make his move to the front. With fifteen laps to go, Umberger quickly passes the 17 of Burchett to take over the third place position.
The scoreboard showed ten laps to go just as the leaders started to catch up with lapped traffic. This allowed the gaps to be closed and the front runners to be within a car length of one another. Umberger began to make his move on Buckingham as both cars exchanged some bumps. Just as the battle heated up, Burkes slowed in turn four with a flat tire. When the field was restarted, only eight laps remained with $2,000 on the line for first.
Mays got a big lead coming out of four when he took the green, leaving Umberger and Buckingham to battle for second. Going into turn one, Umberger dove under Buckingham to take away second. The two cars emerged from turn to locked together. Umberger took over second and opened the door for Peeples to get under Buckingham to take third.
The white flag dropped giving the field the one lap to go warning. Umberger closed the gap on Mays but didn’t have enough time to make the final pass for the win. “I hope tonight was exciting for everyone because I know it was exciting for us” exclaimed Brandon Umbergber as he climbed out of his beat up number 12. During post race technical inspection, Mays was disqualified for issues surrounding his crate Motor. The win was then awarded to Rural Retreat’s Brandon Umberger. Second place went to Kenny Peeples and third to Shannon Buckingham.
