RURAL RETREAT, VA – Shane Roberts, 2005 Crate National Champion, once again made his dominating presence known this past Saturday at Wythe Raceway. Roberts competed in the quick 6 dash and put his number 17s on the pole position for the $2,000 to win FASTRAK feature event. Brandon Umberger, local Wythe Raceway driver also competed in the quick 6 dash and finished fourth, securing himself a second row starting position for the big event.
Drivers from as far away as Florida and Wisconsin pulled into Rural Retreat for the second part of the $20,000 weekend. The night was highlighted by two qualifying laps for each FASTRAK Pro Late Model driver, followed by a quick 6 dash for the top 6 qualifiers. The finishing order from the dash determined the starting position for the first three rows. Next up were the two heat races to determine the rest of the field.
Dave Burks who made his first 2006 Wythe Raceway appearance qualified on the pole for the first heat race and lead every lap to take the checkered securing himself a 7th place starting position in the feature. Kenny Peeples finished behind Burks in second followed by Chris Carlson out of Greenfield, WI.
Buddy Smith out of Cherryville, NC started on the pole in the second heat race of the night. Smith in his number 08 took the checkered on Friday night, at part one of the $20,000 FASTRAK weekend hosted by Oak Level Speedway. Smith once again took the checkered in his heat to secure the 8th place starting position in the feature. Following Smith to the line were local Wythe Raceway drivers Chase McCormick and Trevor Agee.
The Super Streets kicked off the night with another action packed feature. Jimmy Tate in the number 6 out of Wytheville pulled out to an early lead over the rest of the field. An early caution in turn two pulled the field back together for a double filed complete restart. Once again, Tate pulled to a quick lead while Brian Coake in the number 5 began to make his charge to the front.
Coake who was last weeks feature winner started in the 6th place position. By lap three, Coake had moved into third behind the number 40 of Keith Griffitts. A spin by the number 81 of Robby Orr brought out another caution giving Griffitts another shot at Tate. Tate couldn’t be touched and once again pulled out to an early lead, leaving Griffitts behind to fend off Coake for second.
With eight laps to go Coake sets up Griffitts to make the pass. After Coake looked high in turn one, Griffitts turns up to block him, long enough for Coake to dive to the bottom for the pass. With three to go, Coake and Griffitts closed the gap on Tate, making it anyone’s race to take. When the white flag dropped, Coake followed Tate into turn one. Tate put a block on Coake, but he wasn’t going to go away easily. Entering turn three, Coake dove to the bottom of Tate and the two emerged from turn four locked side by side. As the pair crossed the start finish line, Coake edged Tate out by just a few inches to claim back to back wins in 2006.
Just as the night was heating up for more racing excitement, the rain began to fall and heavy showers permitted the remaining classes from running. The $2,000 to win feature FASTRAK race as well as all other classes are postponed to this Saturday May 20th. In addition to the FASTRAK feature event, Super Late Models will also be returning to Wythe Raceway. For additional information, please visit us on the web at www.WytheRaceWay.com.
