SALUDA, Va. -- So far into the 2006 season Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA has avoided the sophomore jinx and is convincing everyone in the Victory Lap Late Model division that he will be a contender for the 2006 title. Saturday night Powell made it two wins in row by winning Round 1 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T, giving himself a shot at the $25,000 bonus for sweeping all four rounds of the Challenge series. Powell looked dominant much of the race leading flag to flag but in the end had to hold off a very determined Walker Arthur of Forest, VA for the victory. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events with it ballooning to $15,000 if a driver wins three of four events. And finally, if Powell should sweep all four events he would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply. The remaining three rounds of the challenge series are tentatively scheduled for June 10th, August 5th and September 2nd.

“This car has just been flawless over the last two weeks, I can’t thank my crew enough. We went into this season saying if we are going to only win four races all season let’s win the big ones, we’ve got the most important of the four the first one now and it feels awesome to be eligible for a $25,000 bonus,” commented new points leader Jared Powell.

“I can’t say enough about the staff at Virginia Motor Speedway (http://www.racefan.com/Results.asp?TrackID=262&StoryID=182654#) and the job they do every week to give us competitors such a great racetrack and facility to compete at, when you win a race here you have done something,” added the very excited Powell.

Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Neil McCanan, Sommey Lacey and Larry Grimstead, Jr. Arthur picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish. McClanan is also a 2006 Rookie candidate.
