BATTEN TAKES OPENING NIGHT HONORS
Racing action at County Line Raceway got off to a great start on a cool Saturday evening. James Batten takes the Late Model Victory. Other winners included Michael Webb in Super Stock Four Cylinder, Jerry McKeel Sr in Super Stock V-8, Nicki Etheridge in Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Britches Liles in Thunder & Lightning, and Kevin Beard in Pure Stock V-8.
Michael Webb opened the night by claiming the first feature win in the Super Stock Four Cylinder division. Elm City’s Webb, in his #99 Mustang challenged lap after lap. Webb was able to make a last lap pass of Middlesex’s Jason Horne, of Middlesex, driving his #8 Mustang. Kenly’s Brandon Wells, made the biggest move coming from the 8th starting position to challenge the leaders. Wells had to settle for third on the final rundown. Ronnie Johnson made his way back to the front after an early race spin to finish fourth. Glenn bottoms managed to hang on to finish fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Robert Clay, Jim Massengill, Skeeter Liles, Brandon Whitley, and Lynn Wells. Webb and Horne were the heat race winners.
Jerry McKeel Sr was able to hold off all challenges by Jeff Stott and Wade Ferrell to take the victory in Super Stock V-8. Early race leader Johnie Edmonson suffered mechanical trouble and was forced to the pits, handing the lead over to McKeel. McKeel was then forced to protect his lead position after constant challenges by Stott. Middlesex’s McKeel in his #0 Monte Carlo took his first win at County Line Raceway in about a decade. Louisburg’s Stott was impressive in his #01 Camaro, but had to settle for second. Ferrell, of Rocky Mount, was a contender the entire race and crossed the stripe a close third. Rounding out the top five were J.J. Pendergrass and Johnnie Edmondson. Edmondson was the heat race winner.
Rocky Mount’s James Batten and Elm City’s Bobby Bottoms showed what we have in store at County Line Raceway when the Late Models return in August. There were battles throughout the field in the highly competitive division. Batten, in his famous #21 Camaro, took the race lead from pole sitter Bottoms on lap four and had to hold off late race challenges from the #47 Pontiac of Bottoms to take the victory. Britches Liles, Spencer Liggons, Greg Williams, and Kenneth Mangum put on a great battle for the third position throughout the race. Liggons, in his poular Viper racer, started to track down the leaders after making a late race pass of Britches Liles. Greg Williams then was left to challenge Liles for the postion. Williams made a last lap pass of Liles. Liggons wound up third followed by Willaims and Liles, respectively. Mangum was forced to settle for sixth. Bottoms set fast time for the evening in qualifying.
Nicki Etheridge was able to take his #01 Toyota to his first career victory over a stellar field of competitors. Etheridge, of Elm City, led every lap over a very competitive field of Pure Stock Four Cylinder racers. Louisburg’s Joey Morgan and Wendell’s Carlton Toney were challenging lap after lap for the runner up position. The #95 Mustang of Morgan held off all challenges by Toney’s #2 Toyota, to finish second and third, respectively. Gary Dillon and Brian Andrews rounded out the top five. Junior Johnson was the heat race winner.
Thunder & Lightning was the next division to hit the track for action on the 3/8ths mile clay surface. Bailey’s Britches Liles picked up where he left of last season, with a dominating performance. Liles was running the #07, instead of his famous #L2, but that did not affect the outcome. Jerry McKeel Jr, in his #00 Monte Carlo, in only his second start at County Line in the Thunder & Lightning division had to settle for second. McKeel was followed by Johnie Edmondson and Billy Poythress. Liles won the heat race also.
Bailey’s Kevin Beard took the lead from Stantonsburg’s Gary Whitley on the third circuit and held on to win the final feature of the evening. Beard’s #7 Caprice outdualed Whitley’s #21 Monte Carlo for the win. Battleboro’s Michael Lamm came from his eighth starting position to finish third in his #96Malibu. Rounding out the top five were Tony Harrell and David Myers. Whitley and Harrell were heat race winners.
County Line Raceway will pick back up next weekend, Saturday May 6th, with racing in five divisions. Thunder & Lightning, Super Stock Four Cylinder, Super Stock V-8, Pure Stock Four Cylinder, and Pure Stock V-8 will be trying to conquer the 3/8th mile surface. Trophies will be presented for the ‘Best Appearing Cars’ for the 2006 season, next weekend.
