On a warm Saturday in November, it was only fitting that the NDRA’s fastest track would host the finale of the 2009 NDRA National Championship. Lancaster Speedway played host to a championship race that featured a veteran driver grabbing his first NDRA victory and a young gun capturing the inaugural NDRA National Championship.
Dennis “Rambo” Franklin served notice that he may be a force to reckon with in 2010. Franklin vaulted from his outside front row starting position to take the lead on the opening lap. Franklin would set the pace early as all eyes focused on both Franklin and the ensuing battle for the championship. While Franklin continued to lead, the championship battle became more and more complex as each of the top 6 drivers in the championship standings faced countless obstacles which led to each of them finishing at least 1 lap down. Caution flags waved on 10 occasions during the 40 lap feature as Hunter Peacock, Timbo Mangum, Winky McGee, Jason Pack, Mitchell Coble, and Matt Long exchanged positions in the championship standings on countless occasions as the race progressed. Flat tires, accidents, and mechanical failures plagued all of them as the championship literally became a battle of survival.
In the end, Franklin would prevail and make Round 2 of the Nationals his first NDRA victory. Ronnie Mosley Jr., Gary Puckett, Ross Bailes, & Phil Gann rounded out the top 5. Mosley Jr. set fast time and, with his runner up finish, picked up the $500 bonus for the best combined finish between the Johnny Arrants Memorial Race and the championship finale. 2009 Touring Champion Hunter Peacock would survive the storm to capture the National Championship Crown. Winky McGee, Gary Puckett, Mitchell Coble, & Matt Long rounded out the top 5 in the National Championship.
