Wow, some great old tracks there. . . .

The first track I remember was Bowman Gray in about '80, back when they still had the Blunderbuss (large luxury car) division. My first dirt track was Friendship back in the mid to late '80s while Jimmy McCormick was still driving there.

I know many of you have been to way more than me, but I got to adding it up the other evening, and I've been to fourteen different tracks, not including kart tracks, demolition derbies, and drag strips. Sixteen if you count Friendship over time as three (dirt, then asphalt, then dirt on top of asphalt). Been a lot of good times out there and a few bad, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Heidelberg Speedway near Pittsburgh, PA, in 1973 or 1974. I was in high school but not old enough to drive yet, and it took a long time to talk Dad into taking us. Odd, because Dad used to be part of Dutch Hoag's pick-up crew back in the 1950s in upstate NY so I thought he'd be more into it. Joe Mihalic (hope I spelled that right) was track champion and went on to drive an under-funded NASCAR Grand National car for a few years. Heidelberg was torn down to build a strip mall in 1977 or so. The strip mall failed and if you know where to look along I-79 you can still see some of the backstraight and third and fourth turns.

Clearfield Mountain Speedway near Clearfield PA.

The original race track was removed to make way for Interstate 80 back in the 50s and the new Clearfield Mountain Speedway was a one half mile dirt track with a roof over the bleachers - grandstand seating.

The dust and dirt hung inside of the roof and you couldn't see much once the race started for all the dust and dirt in the air.

They later paved it and then they made it back into a dirt track again by making it smaller and then dumping clay over the paved surface.

I believe that it is now down to 3 races per a year, when and if they decide to open it from one year to the next.
