SANDERS PICKS UP FIRST WIN, STEELEY REPEATS
Morgan’s Corner-racing action finally returned to Dixieland Speedway Friday night after a two-week rain delay and Albert Sanders of Chesapeake celebrated his first feature win. In other action, Steve Steeley of South Mills picked up a back-to-back win, his third victory of the season.
The Bigg’s Pontiac Super Four drivers had double features to contend with and Todd Smith of Edenton battled Rickie Waters to pick up his second win of the year. Waters of Virginia Beach settled for second after swapping for the lead several times. Gwen Pritchard of Elizabeth City battled Dale Ore for a solid third place run, leaving Ore to finish fourth. Lew Moulton of Moyock equaled his best run to date with a fifth place finish. The top four spots were inverted for the second feature event and by lap five, Waters had driven to the front and would go on to pick up his fifth win of 2009. Gwen Pritchard drove a smooth race for her second place run and Dale Ore finished third. James Barnes of Windsor made his way into the top five with a fourth place finish and Lew Moulton made it a pair of fives for the night.
T-Tops Sportsman driver, Pat Gonzales, picked up his fourth win of the year by inheriting the lead with 2 laps to go. Gonzales of Elizabeth City was sitting in third when the first two cars took each other out. Charles Meads, also of Elizabeth City was able to avoid the collision and finish in a solid second over Jeff Benson of Suffolk who had his best run to date in third. Mark Overman had been in the lead but after his front stretch tangle settled for fourth. Kenneth Baum of Norfolk rounded out the top five.
Albert Sanders picked up his first speedway win in the Little Caesars Super Street class over last year’s points champion Ben Williams of Virginia Beach. Robert Dobie captured his best feature finish of the year in third and current point’s leader, Fred Smith of Maple, picked up fourth after leading most of the race. William Tyler continued his top-five run with a fifth place finish.
Elizabeth City driver Scott Wiatt picked up his fifth win of the year in the Zero Sub’s of Camden Stock Four division. Scuba Butler of Grandy equal his best finish to date in second and Tommy Weese of Eure continued his top five streak in third. Anthony Forbes of Elizabeth City picked up a solid fourth over Kyle Barnes of Windsor.
The Budweiser Allstar drivers put on the best show in the division in a long time, the entire race was filled with side-by-side, three wide racing action. In the end, it was Steve Steeley of South Mills that picked up the win after suffering a flat tire on lap six and restarting from the rear. It was Steeley’s third win this year. Doug Flinn of Virginia Beach had his best Allstar finish in second over Brian Staton of Camden who picked up third. Steve Cox of Elizabeth City had his best finish of the season after a late-race pass put him in fourth over David Pearce who settled for fifth.
