SUMTER, S. C. - Due to the rainout on June 25 and the planned open date on July 2, drivers at Sumter Speedway hope to get back to the things at hand Saturday night with a six-event racing card plus a special program for the younger generation. Joey's Auto Repair will host the third of four bike races for the kids who are from 2 - 12 years of age. Last month, the largest field ever competed for ribbons and trophies. Participants will be grouped according to their ages.
The Power Wheels competition for kids on battery powered vehicles will be held on July 16. This event is a fund-raiser for Aimee McKenzie, the daughter of former driver Neil "Possum" McKenzie. All of the $5 per competitor entry fee money is earmarked for her and there were 25 entries when the rains came on June 25. This event is sponsored by C-C Recycling.
Due to the organizer being in the hospital following surgery, the date for the Family Day fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation has been changed from July 23 to August 20 when the United Sprint Car Series comes to the 3/8-mile dirt oval for the first time.
With seven more points races left in the 2005 season, only two drivers have any breathing room in the chase for the season points championship. Banjo Duke holds a 370-point lead over Michael Boykin in the Super Stock 4 competition while James Yost leads Karen Cooper by 391 points in the Pure Stock chase. Drivers in the other four classes have leads of less than 100 points with the closest competition being between Pete McKenzie and Hank Hutson in Pure Street class. The veteran McKenzie has 970 points to his credit while Hutson is only 40 points behind with 930.
Gates open Saturday at 5:30 p.m. while racing is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
