Round 3
Elkins Speedway
Elkins, WV
This weekend Danny Wilson and his Cline Construction Co. Steel Block Bandits headed to the Elkins Speedway in rural Elkins, VA. The event was co-sanctioned by Freddie Carpenter and his Steel Block Mafian tour. 19 cars would sign in for competition for the 40 laps 2,000 to win event. What would follow was a undeniably unforgettable event that would see the victory gained by one of the Bandits.
3 heat events were held with Kristian Looney of Bridgewater, VA taking the victory in the first heat. Brian Buckler of Slanesville, WV would take the second heat. And Dusty Campbell of McConnellsville, OH would take the third and final heat event. During the heat race events Kris Eaton would fall out for the evening when an incident on an extremely rough track saw him destroy the bell housing on his Richard Shutts machine relegating him to the trailer for the night. Following the heat events the Elkins Speedway crew would grate and roll the track to attempt to remove the ruts that had developed in both corners of the racetrack, though it would be to no avail come feature time as the ruts would return.
Kristian Looney started from the pole and quickly moved his machine into the lead, but the caution would quickly come out when Brad Hutson and Ron Key got together in turn three, with Brian Buckler also slowing to a stop with a broken driveshaft. With the cars bouncing and bounding in both corners as the track began to peel up again, attrition began to ramp up as car faltered. Meanwhile up front Kristian Looney began to see his dominate drive diminish as Billy Beachler began to give chase from the second spot as the race neared halfway. The Franklin, WV driver was able to move past Looney and into the lead on lap 19 of the main event. And pulling away it looked like Beachler would pull away and take this win. But on lap 27 Beachler would slam into a rut losing a tire and have to pull out of the main event. This would hand the lead back to Kristian Looney who held the lead over Chris Southern, Ron Key, Tracie Sampson and John Tallman. At this point Looney had found a strong line which saw him use the low line to maintain his lead and avoid any trouble. The final caution, eighth of the event, came out shortly thereafter when Sampson got into Chris Southern entering the third corner with Patterson vaulting over the third turn but returning to the track. From this point on Looney held onto the lead with no one able to come close and challenge the Bridgewater, VA driver. With the checkered flying it was Kristian Looney taking his premiere win on the Steel Block Bandit circuit and bringing his #9Q Chevy Impala SS/BRC Lazer G2 Chassis machine to Ernie D’s Victory Lane. Following Looney was John Tallman, Tracie Sampson, Ron Key, and Dustin Hamrick in the top five. Chris Southern, Kevin Keene, Dusty Campbell, Billy Beachler, and Freddie Carpenter rounded out the top ten.
John Tallman took the Revolution Band Hard Charger award coming from 11th to finish 2nd at races end. The Driveway Wizard Tough Luck Award was given to Brian Buckler who lost his driveshaft a mere 2 laps into the feature after having won his heat earlier in the night. And taking the Muddslinger Web Services Move of the Race Award was Kevin Keene.
The Steel Block Bandit series will return to action July 10th at the Potomac Speedway to complete their event20that had fallen to rain after 15 laps on May 29th. Then the series will head to Clary’s Speedway in Brinkleyville, NC on August 1st to compete for the first time in the state of North Carolina.
