Round 1:
Natural Bridge Speedway
Natural Bridge, VA

Danny Wilson had a dream during the offseason and that was to provide the mid-atlantic region a viable Steel Block Late Model touring season, and on the evening of May 24, 2009 that dream became reality. 32 of the best Steel Block drivers descended upon the 3/8 mile red clay oval located off I-81 in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. On this night one of the up and coming regional drivers would take a big win, and a new series, the Cline Construction Co. Steel Block Bandits, would get off to an amazing start.

4 heat races would line up the field for the evening with Louis Timberlake losing an engine in warm-ups and unable to come out for his heat race. The heat races all ran without incident and went to Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA; Walker Arthur of Forest, VA; Kristian Looney of Bridgewater, VA; and Greg Roberson of Waynesboro, VA. Covington, VA’s David Bennett took the B-Main. Provisionals for the night went to Stephens City, VA’s Bubby Tharp, Jr. and to Romney, WV’s Roy Clower.

The obligatory four wide parade lap under a shower of fireworks got the fans in attendance pumped up for the 40 lap main event. Anticipation was dripping in the air when the green flag flew, and the race would immediately come to a crashing stop as contact was made entering the first turn and before it was all over about half the field was setting in turn one and the red flag was out on the field. After clearing the wreck scene only Tim Stalnaker of Natural Bridge unable to continue from the scene. The race was still unable to get a start after an incident brought the caution out again, but the green would fly again, this time for two laps. J.R. Overstreet would spin and collect Billy Beachler and Petie Coffey. By this time Walker Arthur had burst from the outside pole to take the lead and when the green would return to the track he again would pull away over Jared Powell, but the fast man moving up was David Watts of Buchanan, VA whose unassuming red late model with a simple white six on it was flying through the field from his eighth starting spot. David Watts would assume the second spot over Looney shortly before the third caution fell on lap five. As the race went through a few more yellows on the evening as the field moved to the halfway point the field had settled into the strong Walker Arthur holding an advantage over David Watts who held the advantage over Roberson, Looney, Powell, and Gerald Davis who had entered into the top five from his seventh starting position. Past halfway Gerald davis worked past Looney and was now in fourth, but Walker still was looking untouchable in the green and white 87 machine. But another car was showing a blistering pace as he came from the back, David Bennett, surged past Powell and Davis and was running fourth as the final laps clicked down. It was now looking definite though for Arthur who consistently would pull out leads over Watts. And as the field entered turn one with only four laps to go the most spectacular incident of the night would occur when contact sent David Bennett flying off the rim in turn one and slamming hard into the turn one retainer, Bennett would roll the 14 machine and land on his roof with the tail end of the car hanging over the racing surface. Bennett was OK but his night was done as the car was parked in his pit mere yards from where he rolled. At the restart Arthur again pulled Watts and Roberson into the corner, with clear sailing Forest, VA driver Walker Arthur would take the checkered flag and go to Ernie D’s Enterprises Victory Lane in the first ever Cline Construction Co. Steel Block Bandits tour event by 1.849 seconds over David Watts, Greg Roberson would parlay a strong run to third, Jared Powell would take fourth in his first race of the season, and Gerald Davis would round out the top five. Lewis Hudson came from tenth to finish sixth, Kristian Looney would fade a bit at the end to take seventh, Kris Eaton would earn the hard charger ward coming from 22nd to secure the eighth position at race end, David Lipscombe was a quiet but strong ninth, and J.R. Overstreet would recover from several incidents during the night to collect a top ten finish. The tough luck award would be awarded following the event to Roy Clower of Romney, VA whose night ended in a hard wreck on lap 18.
