Chris Hitchens of Milton, Del. drove a flawless race, taking the lead on the final lap to score his first career win in the 15 lap feature for Crate Models Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Tim Trimble of Easton, Md. took the lead from Matt Hawkins just before halfway and put and end to Michael White’s streak in winning the 15-lap AC Delco Modified feature. Steve White of Laurel, Del. beat the field and the rain to remain perfect in winning his third Mod Lite feature of the year and Mel Joseph Jr. of Georgetown, Del. took advantage of a slip by Jamie Wagner in the final turn to win the 10-lap Little Lincoln Vintage main.
A solid field of 21 Crate Late Models took the green with rookie Matt Hill setting the pace. Hill led the first two laps before spinning in the fourth turn to bring out the yellow. Chris Hitchens was the new leader with defending champ, Joe Warren running in second.
At the halfway sign the top five were Hitchens, Warren, Ryan Walls, Herb Tunis and Clint Chalabala. Warren was looking for his second straight win but could not shake Hitchens. Hitchens stayed in the low groove going into the third turn and pulled even and then out raced Warren back to the checkered for the win in his Connell Roofing No. 77. Warren finished in the second spot with Walls third. Fourth went to Tunis and Chalabala had a personal best finishing in fifth. Fast time in qualifying was set by Hitchens.
The Little Lincoln Vintage Cars made their first start of the season. Mel Joseph, Jr. led the first three laps holding off Donald Robinson, Jr. Jamie Wagner mounted a charge from his fifth starting spot and took the lead on lap four.
At the halfway sign the top five were Wagner, Joseph, Bill Brittingham, Robinson and John Stevenson. The second half was all green with the top three battling for the lead. On the final turn Wagner slipped a little high and Joseph, Jr. drove by on the bottom for the win in the Mitchell’s Auto & Truck Salvage ’57 Chevy. Wagner held on for second followed by Brittingham, Robinson, Jr. and Stevenson in the top five.
