Former Super Late Model champion, David Pettyjohn had begun to doubt if he would ever win another feature in the division. On Saturday night at Delaware International he squashed those doubts by taking the win in the 20-lap William J. Cathell Memorial feature.
Rookie Barry Beauchamp started on the point in the 20 lap Super Late Model feature. The yellow was out before the first lap was in the book for a tangle involving Kevin Scott, Jr., Richard Jarvis, Jr. and Kerry King.
Beauchamp would lead the first two laps before Ross Robinson, who started in seventh, took the lead. David Pettyjohn followed into second with Beauchamp falling to third. Beauchamp’s run ended on lap four as he rolled to a stop to bring out the second yellow flag.
David Hill got by Pettyjohn on the restart but it would be Derrike Hill threading his way into second on lap six. The caution was out for a third time on lap seven for a tangle in the third turn involving David Hill, Eric Vent, Bob Geiger and Scott, Jr.
On the restart, Pettyjohn moved back into second behind Robinson with Derrike Hill falling to third. Ray Davis, Jr. and Donald Lingo, Jr. were both on the move and at the halfway point the top five were Robinson, Pettyjohn, Davis, Lingo and Rick Whaley.
King came to a stop to bring out the yellow on lap 13 as the leader pulled off the top of the track and also rolled to a stop. Robinson was done for the night and Pettyjohn was the new leader. The next lap produced yet another caution when Jarvis and Whaley got hooked together coming off turn four.
Two more yellows would bring the race down to a green-white-checkered finish. Pettyjohn was able to hold off Davis on the restart and then drove his Hitchen’s Bros, Trucking/Rocket to the win.
“It’s great to be back in victory lane,” said Pettyjohn. “I had begun to wonder and had forgot what it felt like to be here.” On the final lap, Derrike Hill complete the drive of his young career getting under Davis in the final turn to record his personal best by finishing second. Davis finished in the third spot with Lingo fourth and Staci Warrington taking fifth. Heats were won by Jarvis and Lingo.
Nick Davis started on the pole in the 15 lap Crate Model feature and jumped out to the early lead. Herb Tunis ran in second with Joe Warren getting by Matt Hill for third. Three cautions in the first half of the race put Warren on Davis’ bumper by lap five. At the halfway sign the top five were Davis, Warren, Tunis, Kelly Putz and Hill.
Three consecutive yellows on laps 10, 11 and 12 allowed Warren to plan some strategy. Going into the final two turn on the last lap, Warren, in his Big Fish Grill/BRC Lazer went to the outside and was able to pull off the pass for the win ending Davis’ near perfect run.
Tunis crossed the line in third but failed the post race inspection with a tire infraction. Kelly Putz was credited with the third spot followed by Hill and Chris Hitchens in the top five. Fast qualifier was Ryan Walls.
The Slide for 5 cars made their season debut. Dyllan Betts made a move off the standing start that saw him pushed sideways all the way to the first turn. When he finally got straightened out, he was in the lead.
Betts was able to hold off the challenges of Randy Gray in the final two laps to go on to the checkered. Gray finished in the second spot with Tyler White, Adam Cornelius and Matt Carmean rounding out the top five.
