For most of the 20 laps it looked like Richard Jarvis, Jr. would have an easy go of it in the Super Late Model main Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Jarvis started his night by winning the first heat which placed him on the pole for the feature event. Former two time track champion, Donald Lingo, Jr. had other ideas however and almost pulled off the win.
In the feature, Jarvis quickly tried to distance himself for second heat winner, Ross Robinson. Robinson was strong but defending point champion, Ray Davis, Jr. was quicker as he took the second spot on lap two.
Rick Whaley was on a charge taking fourth from David Pettyjohn on lap three and Donald Lingo, who started in 11th dropped Pettyjohn from the top five on lap four. The one and only caution in the race came on lap eight when Derrike Hill spun in the third turn.
Lingo got past Whaley for third on the restart and at the halfway sign it was Jarvis again pulling away followed by Davis, Lingo, Whaley and Robinson. Lingo immediately went to work on Davis taking the second spot on lap 13. Whaley’s drive ended two laps later as he pulled to the infield.
What originally appeared to be a comfortable lead soon evaporated as Lingo pulled to the back spoiler of Jarvis with three laps to go. Lingo tried both the high and low sides of Jarvis in an attempt to pull of the pass but Jarvis was up for the challenge and brought the Mid-Coastal Siding/Rocket home for the win just ..22 seconds ahead of Lingo.
“It’s a great way to start off the year,” smiled Jarvis. “We had a decent track to start with but it went away a little faster than I than thought it would and it hurt us a little at the end but we were able to prevail.”
Lingo looked strong in the race and finished a hard earned second with Davis in third. Fourth went to Robinson and Kerry King came on strong in the closing laps to finish in fifth.
A great opening night field of 26 Crate Models was on hand Saturday night. Ryan Walls set fast time in qualifying putting him on the pole for the 15 lap main. Walls set the pace at the drop of the green with Kelly Putz in pursuit. Chris Hitchens got by Tyler Reed for second on lap two.
At the halfway sign the top three remained the same with Joe Warren in fourth and Reed fifth. Walls’ drive went up in smoke on lap 11 as the yellow came out for his badly smoke car. Putz was the new leader and was able to hold off Hitchens for the final two laps to take the win in the Brown’s Service & Repair No. 59. Hitchens finished a person best in the division in second with Warren third. Reed remained smooth to finish in fourth and Mike Wilson rounded out the top five.
