In the early 1950's the horse track surrounding the Wilmington (NC) sports complex, Legion Stadium, was converted to auto racing. The 1953 season featured "roadsters" cut-down street rods, drive 'um to the track and race 'um! NASCAR's sportsman division was the featured attraction for the 1954 season, along with the crowning of a "Miss Wilmington-NASCAR" beauty queen. The city's blue-blood aristocracy were not amused or entertained, the dusty, noisy, racers never returned, and the track soon disappered as well. The 1954 season point standings features some iconic racing names.........1.E.R Rackley 2. Walter Wood 3. Dick Burns 4. Perry O'Berry 5. BOBBY MYERS 6. SHORTY YORK 7 Harvey Henderson 8.J.D. Moose 9.
