Saluda, VA – Anything and everything can happen on double point night and it did at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD took the lead on lap two of the 35-lap Victory Lap Late Model feature and never looked back as he picked up his second victory of the season. It wasn’t as easy at it may have looked. Lathroum dominated the caution filed event until the final few laps when Roland Mann of Chaptico, MD made a bid for the lead. Lathroum held off the very determined Mann at the line to pick up the victory by less than a few feet.

“I got caught sleeping last week and it wasn’t going to happen to me again this week,” commented Lathroum as he climbed out of his #6L Three Mules Welding / Superior Tank / ACI / Aldridge Ford / Pilkerton Masonry / Eugene Copsey’s Plumbing / All American Harley / Nancy’s Guys and Gals / Clinton Concrete / Lathroum’s Seafood / Larry Hill’s & Son Excavating / Ford Mastersbilt.

Lathroum set fast time in “Hot Lap” qualifying and inverted the top six cars putting Jim Jones and Brad Rigdon on the front row leading the filed to green. It took several attempts to get the race started but once it did Lathroum went straight to the high side and powered around Jones for the lead on lap two.

Lathroum spent most of the night out in front by himself with only the cautions closing the field. The last caution came out on lap 33 for a wreck in turn one. That set up a green, white, checkered finish. On the restart Mann jumped to the inside of Lathroum as they headed into turn one. Lathroum pulled mann out of turn two and looked to have enough of a cushion to hold Mann at bay. Mann tried one more time out of turn four but came up about four feet short at the line to Lathroum who collected his second victory of the season.

“I had to drive it hard to keep it in front, but down here (VMS) it’s never easy to get a win,” commented Lathroum on the close finish. Rounding out the top five were tenth starting Roland Mann, twelfth starting Matt Morgan, fifteenth Starting Scott Adams and Mark Parks. Matt Morgan picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish. Morgan also picked up a $100 bonus in the Morgan Race Engines Award for finishing in the top three with a Morgan International Race Engine.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Chuck Marks of Bryans Road, MD held off Renee Weeks of Powhatan, VA to grab his first career modified win at VMS. Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA set fast time and inverted the top eight qualifiers. That put Matt Dickens and Chuck Marks on the front row and leading the field to green.

Marks won the drag race into turn one and pulled out to a four-car length advantage over Page Harrison who had worked his way to second. Coming through the field was Hamilton as he had made his way to third by lap nine. On lap 13 Hamilton went to the outside to take over second from Mark Claar Sr. It only took three laps for Hamilton to catch and pass Marks for the lead. On lap 21 Hamilton ran over debris on the backstretch and suffered a right rear flat sending him to the pits. That handed the lead back to Marks, a lead he would never relinquish. Marks only challenge came from Renee Weeks, but Marks was able to hold back her advances and take home his career first modified victory at VMS.

“It’s been a long, long time coming we have struggled and put in a lot of hard work and Charlie Wood jumped on board a couple of weeks ago and this car just came to life, you could drive it high or low,” commented Marks in a very emotional victory.

Rounding out the top five were Renee Weeks, Page Harrison, Brian Dobie and eighteenth starting Donnie Medlin. Ron Taylor picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his eleventh place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time in “Hot Lap” qualifying for the seventh time in eight races. Arthur then inverted the top four fastest cars with the pill draw. That put Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC and Derek Scott of Chesapeake, VA on the front row. On the drop of the green Bolac gained control out of turn 2 with Scott and Arthur in tow. On lap 6 Arhtur dispatched of Scott for second and set out for Bolac.

On several occasions Arthur tried to take the top spot but Bolac was up for the challenge. With one to go Arthru made one a last ditch effort to take the lead in turn one but could not make the move stick. That gave Bolac all the room he needed to take home his first career sportsman victory at VMS.

“We had a good car this week, and I owe it all to John Staton he has helped us a ton, the championship in 2003 was good for us but we weren’t a winning car, we’ve made a lot of changes to get here,” commented Bolac. Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Derek Scott, Bobby Bustamante and Vaughan Haywood. Joe Scarbrough picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his tenth place finish in his very first visit to VMS.

John Mosby of Doswell, VA gave himself an early 33rd birthday present by winning both the Al’s Auto Parts Charger and Dixie Chopper All American features.

Mosby, who turns 33 on July 4th, showed his dominance this week in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature by charging from his third place starting position to lead the first lap. But Bret Adkins would have none of it as he made it a race with five laps to go. On lap 10 as the two exited turn four Adkins tried to get inside Mosby for the lead. The two raced door to door into turn one were Mosby regained control. Adkins took one more shot at Mosby this time on lap 13 as the two came to the white flag. But it was Adkins with all the muscle as he held off Adkins for the victory, his fourth of the season. Rounding out the top five were Bret Adkins, Vernon Kirby, Marty Coltrain and Richard Thompson.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Mosby started seventh, worked his way tot eh fornt and on lap 19 made a dramatic three wide pass out of turn four to take the lead from Shawn Otey. Mosby would then hold off Otey and Brian Maxey to get his career first Charger win. Rounding out the top Shawn Otey, Brian Maxey, Keith Hubbard and Bob Terry. Mosby also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his win.
