Delmar, DE…..Your better be ready for some racing action, as the season is just kicking off. The Delaware Motorsports Complex has expanded the schedule for the clay oval along with the Dragway with fast slick action set for this year. It’s the tracks 46th year of operation this season.
The complex runs all three tracks with a different flavor of racing for everyone who choose to watch. The complex is the home of the Delaware International Speedway (1/2 mile clay oval track), the U. S. 13 Dragway (1/4 mile strip), and the U. S. 13 Kart Club Track is also located on the property. The complex is located just a half mile north of the Mason Dixon state line for Delmar, DE, located 30 minutes to the beaches and 50 miles from Dover, DE.
Owner/promoter Charlie Cathell has made some interesting changes in the half mile clay track regular Saturday night racing to keep fans on their feet each week. The circle track has amped up with some really fun times for fans and teams.
There will be a Mix & Match race on three of the Saturday nights in the season. The first will be on May 2. This will be a hit because the Late Models and the NAPA Big Block Modifieds will run nose to nose on the track. This usually only happens with the Camp Barnes Benefit Race, and the Nov. Delaware Dirt Track Championship are run. The two classes will take 10 cars out of each of the two divisions in individual heats, then 4 more cars added in the consi, and finally 2 more spots. The final two spots will come from the highest in track points that did not qualify to round out the field with 26 cars total.
An old favorite from the past will return with the NAPA Big Block Modified in a "Run What You Brung" feature on May 23, then Aug. 29, 2009 the Super Late Models will "Run What You Brung". The rules are much more lacks then the usual rules. I’m not sure about the limits of settings but it should be fun to watch. "Wings and Things" will be on July 4th; where all five divisions will compete. That is a hoot to see with cars putting wings like the URC Sprints run and the high panels on the rear of sides.
For the first time ever, Delaware International Speedway will go "Topless" on July 18th. All five divisions will run with the top or roofs removed. For the first time fans will get a birds eye view of the drivers as they run wheel to wheel for positions. This will be a thrill to see.
Along with all these new fashion of races this year, there is still the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, which rolls in to race on Tuesday, May 12. Then the World of Outlaws Late Model Series return on Thursday, May 28. May is just jammed pack full of racing. Tickets are on sale now for the WoO Sprint show.
