Southampton speedway in Capron is barely a ghost. I went there back in 93 or so for a Hav-A-Tampa race when it was dirt, never went after it got paved. Well, I did go there a few months ago to take some pictures, and it looks like it would be fairly easy to get going again (although I'm sure looks can be deceiving).

The sign by Hwy 58 looks like it could be racing today (in fact, almost looks like it's open now), and based on some of the concession stand choices, I'd say it was open as recently as '93 (the had "freedom fries")

You can check out some of my pictures at LuvRacin.com on the Virginia Photos (http://www.luvracin.com/00_pics/VA.htm) page.

Carpon hasn't been closed that long. It was open well past 93, maybe still in the 2000's I cant remember the exact year it closed. It was one of the few asphalt tracks I actually enjoyed going to. Lisa actually had a cousin who won some track championships there. When it was dirt I belivie. It was a long drive though from Greenville NC on a friday afternoon:lol:

Yeah, Phil was the man to beat on every Friday night except the ones the 2 black Dean Motorsports rides rolled in, piloted by Mark McFarland & Denny Hamlin. Denny was 5 for 5 there the last season they opened.

I never went there when it was dirt, but back before I know what a dirt late model was we went there every Friday night & SoBo every Sat night for about 5 years. It was a great asphalt track, just needed a little better management.

Poor management, I'm assuming, is what ended up being it's demise. Anyone know the reason behind it closing?

Southhampton was racing early in the 2004 season, but closed after a few weeks. Guess the numbers weren't adding up. There were attempts for a couple seasons afterwards, to re-open the track under a "club" format with racing on Sunday afternoons. Those efforts were unsuccessful too, and it's still idle.

One thing that killed em was they had a series type deal, where if you could win all 6 races, you got like either $15,000 or $25,000, can't remember. We'll Denny won the first 5, then the 6th race they called for weather. Then they didn't reschedule, and there was threats of lawsuits and all, I really don't know the exact details. They did end up running the race awhile later, not many cars showed. When they opened the following season, the cars just didn't show like they did the season before, and neither did the fans.

Does anyone else remember the wall falling down on the front stretch after alot of rain??? lol

Used to go to tha capron track back from the early to mid 90's when it was dirt. Crazy high banked tri-oval dirt track! Remember when Joe Gaita showed up with his "outlaw" late model. We never seen a Late model like that before, big wing on the back the whole early nineties late model deal. There was only 12 or 13 late models and Joe Gaita lapped everyone in a 20 lap feature. Me and my Dad moved to Pensacola, Florida in 96 or so but if anybody knows these names than you know some regulars that raced there. Rodney Brickhouse, Glenn Hawkins, Mike Shearin, Tommy Cherry, Bert Culpepper and my favorite Bobby Webb. Those are the only ones I remember if anyone else knows or has any updates of any of these guys I'd love to hear it. 15 years or so later and me and my Dad still talk about the place.

I live in southampton county and from what I was told near the end the payout was done in checks and soon after that the checks started bouncing, people didnt get paid so they didnt go back. Also you will not be seeing that track open any time soon they want an arm and a leg for it and the fact that since thay have not ran a race atleast one time a year the county ordinance for the track has lapsed, so who ever buys it would have to go back in front of the county to get it voted back in as a race track. Thats what we hear arround here anyway, so it is deffinantly a ghost, to bad it was fun when it was dirt.
