These two ghosts will take some old time info. In the 1950's,and maybe into the '60, there were two different dirt tracks in Johnston County, NC: "Brown's Speedway" and "Johnston County Speedway". I'd be surprised if any evidence remains of either track, but would still like to know their location.

The info I had lead me here (http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=11&Z=17&X=1801&Y=9847&W=3&qs=%7cwillow+springs%7cnc%7c) for Johnston County Speedway. 1999 areial and 2006 GESI shows very good TS topo does not zoom in enough.

True. The current kart track, "Johnston County Speedway", uses the same name as the old speedway, but I don't think there's any connection except the name.

I live right around the corner from the Johnston County kart track. Its not a kart track anymore. It has been turned into a BMX track.

Wow! When did that happen, that was a great Kart facility! I know I am getting off topic, just curious.

Earl Pearson Jr's big kart race was the last one I think. If not, there were only a couple after it.

Got a tip from of "an old dirt round track near Cat Tail Pond....back in the '50's don't know it it's still there".........Anyway, there is that familliar outline near Cat Tail Pond/hwy 96/Antioch Chruch road near Selma, NC. Now, I don't know which track this is, if it's really a ghost, Brown's or Johnston Co.

I believe Brown's speedway was in Selma, NC. A lot of my stepmothers family is from there and they've mentioned in several times.

Yep, you're correct. Actually, both tracks, Brown's and Johnston co. were in very close proximity to each other and both were in the Selma community. Brown's was right beside Cat Tail pond, and JCS was, essentially, accross the road. The featured aerial photos are of Johnston County Speedway.

Redclay if you can go the Farm Serice office they have areials going back to the 30s in the office. You can be the hero and nail these two down. The county GIS site goes back only to 2005.:jedi:

For those interested, Friday, 3/13/09 there's gonna be a guided (racer from back in the day leading the effort) search party for these two tracks. The ghost-busters will be meeting in Four Oaks around mid day before proceding to the track sites. Bring your camera, can't never tell, an old coupe might have been left at the track!!
