SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21 AND IT'S WEATHER DATE SUNDAY FEBRUARY 22 , HAS BEEN CANCELED
JOIN US NEXT SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, FOR THE BIG BLOCK MODIFIEDS AND LATE MODELS
HAGERSTOWN MD. For the seventh season in a row Hagerstown Speedway has
lost this weekend's season opener to weather. Saturday's show was to
feature the 410 Sprints and Late Models.
With temperatures forecast not to get out of the 30's Saturday and
Sunday, promoter Frank Plessinger canceled the weekend festivities. "It
would be too cold for both fans and competitors", said Plessinger.
"Track preparation would be very difficult with the sub freezing
temperatures we have been having at night."
Hagerstown Speedway will try again next Saturday, February 28th with the
Octoberfest qualifier for Big Block Modifieds and Late Models. Pit
gates will open at 10:00 a.m. with the grandstands opening at 11:00 a.m.
Hot laps begin at 1:00 p.m. with race time at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Should Saturday's weather be a factor, Sunday will be used as a make up
date. Times would remain the same.

pretty sure there was a thread about all us southerners being a bunch of kitties cause we didnt race in the cold...........and I distinctly remember a good amount of cold weather heros exclaiming they would race in the frozen hell of the north no matter what??talking about it was the easy part I guess!!
And really, after seven straight years you would think someone would move it up a little....after all it is still feb. and you guys do live in the north.........helllooooooooooo

But our Tracks aren't dropping like flies
We have no control over the promoters
For what it's worth, tracks in NC aren't dropping like flies either. About the only track in question at this point is Dublin. It's pretty much a wash because we gained a nice little bullring last year in Hammerdown Speedway.

No ,but your poulation is ,there moving down here cause you aint got to shovel sunshine!!!Btw,dont you now live down here somewhere?Mr chaser, no disrespect here and we have discussed this before, but,the county I live in is about as big as most of the states in the northeast....we have alot more tracks geographically so naturally there would be more that could close, cause theres more of them........My whole point was ,where are all the loudmouths that were calling us all abunch of fairweathered pu...(kitties) when it comes to racing in the cold?............dont see them giving the fairweather promotor any grief.........course the fairweather promoter lives in the same area as most of them and could probably identify them at the track.........like i said,TALKING about how great of a fan you are and would sit through anything to see a race is the easy part.................

maybe you didn't read the results from Golden Isle and East Bay and the first night at Volusia, but at Golden Isle and East Bay the temperature was in the high 30's and, don't care if your from the north or south or as in your case half way that's still pretty damn cool to be at a track racing, but they raced

I being from the north, agree with Bill, the fan support and driver support at "MOST" northern tracks tends to be better than any track in NC other than BOWMAN GRAY. I think the problem with NC, is there is to many other options for entertainment. Where I was from in NY, my home track was Accord Speedway. The population in that county is 100,000, that 50,000 less than Johnston County. On most friday night's there is standing room only with 25-40 cars in each class. But it is the only thing to do within 25 miles of there, oh I forgot there is one 20 lane bowling ally that is falling down..............and trust me the economy there is 10 times worse than here. Beleive this the closest Walmart it 25 miles.
But here is my question.............are the northern tracks any SMARTER than the Southern ones.......................
I MEAN AFTER 7 STRAIGHT SEASON OPEN CANCELLATIONS , DONT YOU THINK THAT THEY WOULD CATCH ON AND FIGURE OUT THEY ARE TRYING TO START THE SEASON TO EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New poster here ... may I chime in?
Logic would seem to dictate that after five or six events being stymied by the lack of 'global warming' that a seventh try wouldn't come off either. I don't think the cancellation has anything to do with the desire of the fans OR the racers to endure the cold. It's a simple matter of being able to pay the purse if not enough fans and drivers come through the gates. Would you rather he try to run in the cold, have everyone show up ... and then not be able to pay the racers a full purse because not enough fans arrived?
The southern fans here should realize that there is really a limited season north of the Mason-Dixon. A 28 week season is a stretch up there... and promoters are always optimistic, so it's not unusual at all to lose the first two, or even three events to weather. I'd give the guy a grade of B+ for optimism and a D- for planning.

I agree with what you said. But it was your northern brothers giving the fans and promoters down here hell a few weeks back for not scheduling a race with short notice for the exact reasons you laid out. So explain it to your friends "above the line: BTW welcome to LRC

I don't think the southern promotors were being given hell for not scheduling a race, it was more for the fact that they didn't even return a phone call or anything. The reasons for not having a race in December were all valid, especially with short notice, but the fact that they didn't at least call back and say "no thanks" was the main problem, at least the way I saw it.
That being said, we're all jonesin' for some racing, but I do agree that mid-February in MD is pushing it a bit. Same with the end of Feb in PA (which I hope to go to next weekend).

I know this would never work, but it would be good in theory........... Open up March, April, May.,.............close JUNE JULY AUGUST, and finish up September and October.......
Tracks more and more are taking a back seat to the "SUMMER SEASON" entertainment stuff................. Like concerts, ball games, family reunions, weddings............. the list could go on and on.

Thanks for the welcome ... as for giving anyone grief about a schedule - it's a fools argument most of the time. There are obvious differences in attitude between northern and southern racers and track programs. I know some that give the southern guys a hard time just because they are Yankees and feel they have the right. And I know many down south that give it right back because the Yankees deserve it. It's like discussing which is the faster color of race car . . . futile. Or which top fuel funny cars are faster the Fords or the Chevy... when we all know that most of them are running a hemi-head Chrysler motor!
I'll be at the IMCA Spring Nationals in Nebraska four weeks from today and I expect it will be colder than I'd like to endure, and there is always the chance of really bitter weather this early. Is that going to stop many of the guys from planning on racing? NO... but combined with an uncertain economy and it may mean a lot of the fans don't make the long haul. That's sad, but nobody is at fault.
Again, thanks for the welcome and I'm glad to be aboard.
