In the late 1970's Richard Brickhouse, who cut his racing teeth at Carolina Beach Speedway, and won 1969's inaugural "Talladega 500", built and opened the "Pender County Speedway". Located on the Brickhouse farm in the Pender county (NC) community of Rocky Point, the track eventually forced the closure of Leland Raceway and became the focus of Wilmington-area dirt racing. Unfortunately, the economic conditions of the early '80's coupled with the transformation to the radical styled NDRA racer prooved too much for PCS, and the track did not survive this period. Ultimately the site was sold for housing, and no evidence remains of the track. Fortunately, Terraserver's 1990 imaging did capture the Pender County Speedway.

The aerial in post #1 is not Pender...that is a horse ring measuring less than 0.15 miles. The Boggs article says Pender measuers 0.45 miles. Back to the search
Pender County Speedway was a neat little dirt track that had a trioval out in the country , alot of big named dirt drivers raced at the track when it was in its prime , Pender County is where I started my photography career in 1985 when Donald & Shirley Autry where the promoters at the time .

That particular lay-out may be a horse ring, but the outline of a larger track can be seen surrounding the track-in-the-photo. At any rate, I'm confident the location is the same because I can rember the road leading to the track and it is the same as the photo. Also, the area was bulldozed some time ago, any photo will have to date from the '80's. This particular image was dated 1990, that's about as early as exists. When viewing this image on Terraserver, the Brickhouse air-strip is visible adjacent to the track, and I've flown into that airstrip, with my dad, to borrow some wheel spacers from Richard Brickhouse.
