Delmar, DE…..
That’s right, out with the old season and in with the new season. Now that all the banquets have been held, and all the awards to every one of the deserving great racing drivers; its time to get ready for this season. The Delaware Motorsports Complex of Delmar, DE is doing just that.
Earlier this month the banquets for both the dragway and speedway were held at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino with much appreciated drivers. Over 500 attended the gala. A total of $51,750 in cash was handed out to the top ten in points in all five of the weekly classes.
The schedules for all three tracks are in the works. The ½ mile clay oval schedule is also in the final stages of being completed but, nothing official has been released from the track.
It will be April before the fast oval will hold anything. But the mighty URC Sprints who will kick off the sixty-second season for the sprints on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the Bridgeport Speedway in NJ. The next date in the books is Saturday, April 18, at the Delaware International Speedway. As it stands now the URC schedule has 7 dates scheduled to Delmar.
The WoO and the WoOLMS have been named as to be put on the DIS schedule but it is not official yet. The program is usually a week night event and ties in with the Dover International Speedway NASCAR weekend. Always a big turn on for all race fans; a little clay to play in, then asphalt action. Keep an eye out for announcing the schedule, rule changes, on the tracks web site available at www.delawareracing.com (http://www.delawareracing.com/).
The Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Car Club held their 13th Annual Banquet Jan. 17 at the Viola Ruritan Building in Viola, DE. For the second straight year Bill Brittingham of Felton, DE was honored and collected his 5th overall championship since racing with the club.
It was a memorable night for many. All the drivers received trophies, all sixteen that raced in 2008. A special thank you went out for Oscar Fields as the tech and engine man and sponsors. Brittingham made a special appreciation to his Mother and Wife by making them come to the front of the room where he presented each of them a diamond necklace. Brittingham remarked that “Both of these women put up with a lot of my time away from them working on the car. Their support means everything to me. My whole crew and team make it possible for me to race.” Brittingham also acknowledged his crew chief Steve Ellingsworth with an identical 4 ft trophy including flames.
Greg Mitchell, co-founder of the club was able to attend this year after being absent for a number of years due to circumstances uncontrollable. Mitchell enjoyed being back in the saddle sort to speak. Mitchell added that he has 4 new cars hopefully that will be making the shows this year and maybe more.
Duke Walsen of Milford, DE announced he was retiring after the 2008 season. Duke drives the no. 9 Budweiser 56’ Ford, but with a Chevy engine has decided to step down while he was still on top as you might say. Rumor has his son may take over driving? Let’s hope he does, the more drivers, the merrier fans. Walsen has been the MC at the banquets and does an outstanding job. Let’s hope he will continue to MC?
The schedule tentatively for the Little Lincoln Club has 7 dates at Delmar, not counting Camp Barnes or the WoOLMS show if asked to participate. The club has also tentatively scheduled to run the limited schedule at Georgetown during the season. For more on the club visit the clubs web at www.littlelincolns.com (http://www.littlelincolns.com/) web. There are photos, drivers & car information and the latest rules there.
