Doublenaught,Man thanks a lot for those old fayetteville pics..!! I see Glen Mcduffie's #77 blue Fairlane in the background on one pic! And the #77 red looking 55 chevy waiting in line to come onto the track is Jerry Rayner. (Don't think i spelled the last name right)!! Can't remember the 13 car's driver that had hit the wall in the other pic..!! Doublenaught, post some more old Fay. speedway pictures.!! This is "good stuff"!! Thanks again.....

Good job Kenny! I was wondering if anyone would spot McDuffie's car in the infield. And yes the red 77 is Jerry Raynor, my uncle. Here are some shots back at the shop and "loading up". Jerry had two cars for awhile, can you name the driver of the 88? Also another local car, the 66, do you remember that car?

If I remember correctly "Billy Gomez Sr" drove the #66 blue&silver Camaro .

Look how black the track was...The result of Hossier recaps and calcium on the track... I think that was the best racing that's ever been around here.... Who needs damp racetracks and soft tires?? ... jmo

Oh lord,i'm stumped on the 88 car,but its a Raynor car too, right? Was it a cousin, brother,or something like that? I remember some more Raynor's running back then..!! But i always liked the 77 car of Jerry's.! Thats a neat looking 55 chevy! Boy,i love these pics,Keep'em coming..!!!! Hello there PRP! And you to Mike Bullock, i've watched the #50 make laps around the track too...!!!!!

That's right, the 66 is Billy Gomez. The 88 was Jerry's car also, it was driven by Billy Shaw.

Are ya sure about "Farmer John Mathews" being a number 48? Jimmy Edwards (Porky) has run the 48 number for many years..!! I know at one time Farmer John was #16. But he could have drove a 48 car too..!! I don't know, Maybe somebody else like PRP on here can tell us..!!

Im not 100% on that. I think I remember him driving a Pizza Hut #48 at Wake Co when it was dirt. I just didnt know if he ran FMS. Hell I was a kid running around. LOL I think the hardest pic to find is one of the R5 Ervin Riggsbee.

Hi again Lucky 13. Porky Edwards was the pizza hut #48 out of Fayetteville but he could have let Farmer john drive it at Wake County a time or two. Clyde Keller owned a few pizza huts around this area (even one in Rockingham),and was a dirt track racing fan,so him and Porky's dad hooked up to have the pizza hut race team..!! Porky's brother,Hank Edwards also drove a pizza hut car at one time but it was #6. Those pizza hut cars were the ones to beat, back in their day...!!!!

I think there were actually three tracks in fayetteville. My dad says the was the one near the cemetery then there was one over near snowhill rd. and of course the current track. One of those was paved.they all are in a very close proximity to each other. Do you have the sat. image of the one you found?

I can't find it now its pulling up a different location now still not the track now. It pulled up the first time out by the airport if you type in Fayetteville Speedway it brings up to Doc Bennett but farther down the road and on the bottom side of the road its showing something that looks like it may have been something a longgg time ago. not sure though I was just wondering

The photos at the start of this post are from the old 3/8 Fayetteville dirt track - it is now a cemetery. Champion Speedway was an older track, a little before my time, so I don't know much about it. The current FMS that is operation today was asphalt back in the 70's. At that time the dirt track (cemetary) and the asphalt track (now FMS) were both in operation. At that time FMS was called "Cumberland International Speedway". In the late 70's, after a Saturday night race, the asphalt was dug up and then they raced on dirt the very next weekend (if I remember correctly).

Northside Speedway was on Hwy 401 north of Fayetteville. It was a small go-cart and Legend car asphalt track built by Ed Taylor. It was only open for a couple years.

Yep on current FMS being asphalt... loved that place...

Yep on Northside as a go-kart / Legends track..... look at pics of it on google or anyother map view and look for a trailer off turn 3 down abit.... lived there for 3 years while working for Ed.....lol....

Northside was originaly a 600ft r/c trakc till being stretched and rebuilt for the legends and go-karts.....

that place was a blast... Tiger Tom Pistone, John Craig and family... Elliot Sadler... Armondo Fhips (sp) Jim France and many others came down and played alot...

You guys forgot about the legendary B&S Speedway (Rockfish). Friday nights there were legendary.

It was sad watching Champion Speedway fall to pieces. Growing up on Tom Starling Rd, I remember riding my bicycle around the banks as a kid and loooking for rleics among what was left of the bleahcers. Richard Petty got one of his first wins there.

Any photos of Jim Markham? especially of a '69 Torino he bought from Benny Parsons to do the Grand National thing with, but it also ran on dirt before being destroyed in Martinsville(?) He also had a '39/40 ford coupe and a '64 Galaxie in the mid 60s-early 70s.
