Archie, that's a very interesting question, and one that I've not been able to get a 'straight' answer. There is not universal agreement that there WAS a track in Cerro-Gordo, but I think there was one. Also, there was a track between Whiteville and Chadbourn called 'Columbus County Raceway' and it's often confused with the Cerro-Gordo track. If you have any knowledge or memories of C-G, sure like to hear 'um!

This track was located on Morgan road (adjacent to the Twin-City airport) on US 701 north of Loris, SC. Back in the day, Morgan was a dirt road, it's paved now, but I think a group of way-to-late-to-the-sub-prime-housing-party commandos dug the old speedway up with a backhoe about a year ago. The 68 acre tract was for sale (10,000 DOLLARS/ACRE) and wanna-be Donald Trumps just couldn't resist. Twin City Raceway, and us old timers, were the ultimate loosers. The track could have enjoyed a 'grandfather' status and who knows what the future could have held. Don't have one now.

Post #4 was asking about Columbus County. I found Twin City with the good directions and pic.
If I not mistakin, I believe that we went to Twin Cities on Friday nights and headed to Myrtle Beach on Saturday nights (when MB was dirt).....Twin Cities Raceway was my intro to dirt track racing in the 60's.

Twin City Raceway is DOA, vaporized, and plowed under! Had heard the rumors of its demise, and checked it out, up close and personal 3/6/09. She's gone! In a round-about sort of way, its a caualty of the hell-bent finances that ushered in this current monetary disaster. The old track was on a 68 acre tract that was "for sale" at only TEN THOUSAND PER ACRE........but that was common, in the sub-prime orgy days..........one could build a sub-division and make a gazillion dollars! As the bubble burst, and no buyers came forward for the old track-site, the owners, apprently decided that if the land were razed and cleared, etc. etc. etc., it would "sell quicker". Of course, by then, the bottom had fallen out of the financial bucket, and the bubble BUSTED. Great Timing! Only thing is, the old track was lost in the process. Bummer.

Best I remember, Twin City had two sections of grand stands, one was enclosed with tin and heated with tobbacco barn burners, and the other section was conventional. The plan was to race YEAR 'ROUND!! Good idea, maybe ahead of its time, but ya gotta like their thinking!
Dirtrebel.........too late..........the YANKEES are ALREADY here! It would take an act of congress, AND a Philadelphia lawyer, to build a race track in Brunswick county.
