Southampton Motor Speedway (SMS) will re-open this year and run on Sunday afternoons. The divisions look like they will be Super Street, U-Car, Legends, and MACKA Champ karts. The track is a fast, high banked 4/10th mile asphalt quad oval located about 18 east of Emporia on US-58.

For anyone interested in the champ karts, the following is an e-mail I just received from a friend of mine who I used to race with:

We have the go ahead to race at Southampton on Sundays. We don't have a schedual yet but it will be coming soon. The first practice is March 5th and we may have a money race on that day. Spred the word and get your karts ready, This is going to be an exciting season with cash and prize payouts along with family style cookouts etc. I will have a MACKA rules meeting in the coming weeks, have anybody interested e-mail this address so they will be on the contact list.
Thanks, Stanley (Holmes) His e-mail is: champkartracing@yahoo.com

In year's past we have raced with a wing on top ... if that is still the case and all anyone needs is a wing, I have one that someone can borrow. I actually have a complete winged champ kart that I should have ready to go by the first practice if someone (or more than one person) wants to see what it is like to race there. You can e-mail me at: khf71@comcast.net if you are interested in doing that.

It would be 100 times better if it opened as dirt, but I guess if you have nothing to do on Sundays and are in that area it would almost be better than nothing if you wanted to see some racing.

I had no idea you were so excited about this, Redclay. I'll try to get you on the VIP list and signed up for their weekly newletters! :lol04:

Maybe you'll even get to re-unite with an old friend and ask face-to-face about your banishment! :muahaha:

Cant wait to come up there from NC to watch Freddie Query race his super latemodel in the PASS series race at your place... Any good hotels around there, some info regarding the seating or any other info would be nice... Good directions coming from Concord, NC.

I haven't really kept up with this much because I prefer the dirt tracks, and the new track operators are not good people. :20Satan: I do know that the first practice was set for March 5, but was postponed until the end of March due to insurance problems. I don't know if they have settled the insurance issues or not. I wouldn't get my hopes up about the place actually re-opening, or staying open for very long ... but if it does, the super late models would be awesome running around that place. I'm not sure what the best way to get there from Concord would be, but the track is on US-58 about 18 miles east of Emporia (I think it's exit 11 off of I-95). You shouldn't have a problem getting a motel room there in Emporia. And based on past experience, I wouldn't worry about the seating, getting one has never been a problem before. The stands are at the quad oval part of the track, and with the sunken infield, you can see the whole track from just about anywhere - even with the rigs in the infield.

There were a couple people that tried but could not get it going. As far as I know it's not going to open anytime soon
