...with a wrench and way to figure out how to tweak a trike to pick up a .08 seconds on the neighbor boy's flyer.

Jerry, this brings back a lot of memories for me. We never got a new bike, ever. Everything we owned was second hand or found in the junk yard and piece-mealed until we could take 3 bikes and make one good one. Being I was the youngest of seven I had to wait until my oldest brothers our grew theirs. Do you remember cutting the forks and jamming them on the forks of a good bike to make a chopper? Oh ya, with that banana seat and sissy bar we were the baddest Henry Street Warriors this side of the NorthWestern Railroad tracks. Ah, the good ole days.

you know i have heard that from a many of people. but ill tell you what my
parents had the means to buy us just about any bike we wanted but i would
always go with ma to yard sales just to buy those 2 dollar bikes to take 5
of them to build the ultimate bike. LOL. That was my start in fabrication and
racing i couldn't always beat them going up hill but those 50 lbs bicycles
would kill going back down. LOL.

Dude, a chopper is street cruiser, not made for trails but I know what you mean, it was cool but not very fast and forget jumps, it was purely a cruiser.
We lived on the outskirts of town, across the street was the stock yards, next door was a barn that someone kept horses in with a pasture, behind that was the RR tracks, beyond that was a huge farm with fields and wetlands and beyond that was the rest of our play ground and the only time I saw my parents when I was hungry, tired or heard Mom calling from the back porch, which seemed like a mile away. Once while flying down the road on my bike I was rounding the intersection of the 4 way stop and getting set to launch my bike for a routine jump through the front lawn, which rose sharply then leveled off. As I pumped hard on the pedals in the last stretch then let it coast the last 15 feet to the launch ramp and WHOOSH!! I was airborne only to realize my front tire has come off and was eye level to me, that's when the rest of my life flashed before my eyes as the bike came down, first on the rear wheel and the front FORKS. WHAM! It dug into the grass and the rear came up over my head as I did a complete somersault and slammed on the ground with my ass, back, head and then feet. Ouch! That was the hardest hit I've ever had before and since. Wow. You think I never checked those nuts again? Ever freaking day for a year and every week after.
Sorry, got off topic, too much Christmas wine today.
