I've been to Potomac Speedway quite a few times growing up. I'd like to start running there in the next season. I recently purchased a 79 monte carlo that has been completely stripped. I'll be dropping in a 355 small block and either a Turbo 350 or 400. The car currently has a small 10-bolt rear. My question is, can I make this car competitive in either the Hobby Stock or Street stock divisions? I'm just looking to get out there for seat time to get the experience under my belt.
So, any advice for a new racer?

With a 355 and the stock GM rear you should try the HS class and get some seat time. Feel free to talk to the drivers everyone is willing to lend a hand. Where are you located at. We have a new promoter this year and thing should be good. Don't be affraid to ask questions.

I'm in King George, VA. Just up the road a bit.
I just got the new rules in yesterday. I agree that running the hobby stock class woulod probably be best. I'd be nice to run a larger cfm carb, but it'll get me the experience I'm looking for.
I do have a few questions on the engine requirements. For instance, what do they consider racing pistons? I had planned on rebuilding the 350 with a Summit Chevy 350 Engine Kit (http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=115+323291), but do they consider Summit pistons racing pistons? And can you run any aftermarket cam that meets there requirements or just stock ones that fall into that category.
And one last thing for now (I know I'm getting long winded), what trans would be the best for that class? I can easily get a turbo 350/400 at a decent price, but I've gotten mixed responses from people on using an automatic even with a manual valve body.
I work for John Deere, so the mechanics are there, but with the exception of working on small block chevy's, racing is new territory for me. I appreciate any help, and thanks for the warm welcome.

(And what's the news on the new promoter? I take it Rick Jones has been replaced?)
