Smokey Snellbaker

I've always been a stock car, mod coupe kinda guy, but in the mid-90s went to visit a friend in Pennsylvania and took in a Friday night show at Williams Grove and Saturday night show at Silver Spring. Wow!! There was and is a guy named Smokey Snellbaker up there driving sprints who'd do justice to any of our southern heros and I see that at age 70 he's still getting around the track pretty good! Can't imagine what he must have been like in his prime, then again maybe age 60-70 is his prime! He was sure on top of his game when I saw him. That was a great weekend, having the opportunity to watch that marvelous racer.

Any of you ever watch Smokey race?

I knew I had a photo of smokey here somewhere. This portrait photo is Smokey at a place called Weedsport Speedway, upper NY around 1979-80. The pose photos are from 72-73, maybe Lebanon Pa., not sure. I don't know much about him other than he has quite the reputation in sprints as a top finisher.

Yes and Smokey in a USAC car at Reading. Scrufty was a fan favorite at teh grove and all over. Going back to those days a race was Toby Tobias, Bobby allen and Smokey in sprints or PA BUGS.
I have some Beta tapes of some 16mm stuff of Smokey and the boys at Reading.

The picture of Smokey in the hat was taken at the Syracuse Fairgrounds, and it looks to be the late 70's... possibly the same day he won the Sprint car portion of Super Dirt Week (1978?)
