Rural Retreat, VA (Oct-18) There’s no question about it, Royce Bray did everything right including something very difficult for a driver of Bray’s stature; Keep one eye on the big picture. After starting on the second row, lap after lap Bray fought with David Smith, Shannon Buckingham and Dale Ball for over 2/3’s of the scheduled distance of 50 laps. With **** Barton not in the Grand Finale, Bray’s closest competitors for the $50,000 and 2008 FASTRAK Racing Series GRAND NATIONALS Championship was Ed Dixon, Ron Parker, Chris Steele and Shannon Buckingham. With no communication with his crew, Bray had no way of knowing where his closest competitors were in the running order.
One driver on the charge from the drop of the green flag was Shannon Buckingham who went into the 50 Lap Grand Finale just eight points behind Bray. Buckingham started ninth and quickly charged through the field into the Top 5 early. By the halfway point Bray was challenging Ryan Gifford for third.
By Lap 40, Bray had slipped back to eighth in the running order and Buckingham was challenging second place Jonathan Davenport.
With $50,000 on the line it’s a pretty safe bet Bray had anticipated every possible scenario in terms of where he needed to finish in respect to the other drivers who had a shot at the $50,000. Even if Buckingham won the race, Bray seemingly knew he needed to finish seventh to still collect the big payday.
In the closing laps of the race, Bray moved around seventh place Dale Ball, so whether or not Buckingham overtook Davenport for second then, front runner Ty Dillon would not change the outcome.
