John Thorpe made his first appearance in his blue #63 modified this past weekend at Southern National Raceway Park with a bang, doing nothing short of dominate the 75 lap event. Thorpe was the fastest car in practice, won the Sunoco Pole Award, and then went on to lead the most laps of the race, at times running close to a 9 second lead over the second place car.
The top three in the point standings all had busy days. In the opening laps, AJ Winstead and Doug Paasch were involved in an incident with Irvin Bell which resulted in Winstead losing his back left tire and the majority of his left sheet metal. Paasch had damage to the rear of his car but managed to recollect himself and finish in the 3rd position. Winstead, made repairs to his car and for a while made great strides getting as high as 3rd before mechanical issues ended the reigning champion's day. Aubrey Thurston, who was the points leader coming into the race, managed to hold onto that, although he was also plagued with a spring issue and finished the race 7th. He now is ahead of Winstead in the standings by 50 points.
The bad luck for the top three drivers turned into a guiding light for others. Ronnie Davis brought his #14 machine home in third place, and Buddy Emory, who did double duty this evening in both the RTM series and the NASCAR Whelen Modifieds, brought his #44 car home 4th. Winder, Georgia's Darrell Bryson rounded off the top 5 in his #01 car.
The tour will take a week off and then return to action at Langley Speedway on Saturday, September 27th.
