2428 In 1975 a friend of mine built a '64 Chevelle. It was the first and last race car that he ever had. He ran it at Bowman Gray in Winston-Salem as a street stock powered by a 6 cyl. It also had a stock frame and a '48 Ford 3/4 ton truck rear end. He won a lot of races and a championship with it. He ran it for about 5 years than they allowed tube frames and he didn't want to build another car so he quit. Last year another friend of mine found that car and brought it home. It still has the truck rear end in it. I tried to buy it but he wouldn't sell it so maybe I can help him restore it.

Great photo...I hope that he follows through with it, that would be his greatest achievement to rebuild that car. Nothing compares to cars with history!
what are all those cars in the background?

My Friend and his wife, father in-law, and brother in-law are members of the East Coast Flathead Ford Racing Assn. and those are their part cars.

Archie, you ought to make a Sam Ard #82. Remember that black & orange 64 or 65 chevelle he ran at Dillion and also at Fayetteville some. Didn't he buy that car from Jackie Rogers from Wilmington? It was somebody down that way that ran at Leland Speedway. Then he went on to drive for Thomas Bros. Country Ham and ran team mates with Monk Tate!! Those big bad #00 and #88 chevelles!!!

Ever heard of this guy...#88 Eddie Royster. Photo taken somewhere in VA or MD maybe, not for sure.
Want you to see the Chevelle mainly.
The other Chevelles were in MI, IN or OH early t mid 70's.
:smiley_593:
I guess everyone forgot about " Ray Hendrick " being part of the Thomas Brothers Country Ham Racing !!!
Boy do I remember "Eddie Royster" he used to wear them out at Cumberland International Speedway in the early Seventies , he also Won a Big Late Model Sportsman Race at Beltsville Speedway !!! ...... I dont know what the problem but the photo is having problems uploading ???
Man do I remember the Friday Afternoon that Cale Yarborough tearing up ( almost destroying ) Sam Ard's #82 '66 Chevelle at Beltsville !!!

In 1968, Sam Ard and John Altman co-owned the #84 '64 chevelle. The following year, Sam went on his own and built the #82 Chevelle, Jackie Rogers was chosen by Mr. Altman to replace Sam in the #84. Both Sam and Jackie went on the very successful careers, with Jackie going to Winston Cup and Sam teaming with Howard Thomas/Thomas Bros. Country Ham in 1971. Initially, Sam was teamed, at Thomas Bros., with George Fox and Monk Tate. Eventually, the Thomas Bros. team became a one-car operation with Sam driving/building/winning.

I can read "Thomas Bros. Country Ham" and it's #88, so I'd say Monk Tate.

Right you are 00!
In case anyone is wondering...I didn't know any of these guys being I grew up in Charlotte, Michigan however, after spending most of my adult life in NC I've self taught myself about the history of southern racing, all photos posted are from me researching and talking to people who did know them...all the photos posted are from my personal collection.
Let's see how good you guys really are....He was an NC state champion in the 60's. Who is it and what year did he win the championship?
