MERCER SET TO HOST 2ND FASTRAK NORTHEAST LATE MODEL TOURING EVENT SATURDAY

By Mike Leone

September 10, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mercer, PA…The FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series will head to Mercer Raceway Park this Saturday, September 13 for the second and final time of the season. Race #11 of 12 is scheduled to take the green at 7 p.m.

The 25-lap featuring will pay $1,200 to-win, $150 to-start. Last year’s event was won by Dick Barton and earlier this year current Mercer point leader Frank Guidace made a successful Touring Series debut with the victory. The event will be the final tune-up before Night 1 of the $250,000 FASTRAK Grand Nationals for the Northeast Region on Saturday, October 4 at Mercer.

“Hopefully the weather will cooperate Saturday,” stated Northeast Co-Director and Mercer Raceway Park owner Vicki Emig. “While we have certainly had to fight the weather all season long at Mercer, the Touring events have been much better than 2007. So far we have been able to get in all 10 of our scheduled events even though it took two tries for one of Raceway 7 and Dog Hollow’s shows.”

Dick Barton became the Touring Series’ ninth different winner in 10 races when he won $1,200 in last Friday’s second event at Dog Hollow Speedway. Thus far Max Blair is the only repeat winner. The Centerville, Pa. 18-year-old opened the 2008 Touring Series with a victory on May 24 at McKean County Raceway and backed that up with his second $1,200 victory on August 24 at Eriez Speedway after getting by Tom Snyder, Jr. on lap 21. Along with Blair, Barton, and Guidace, the following drivers have also been victorious: Alan Dellinger (Dog Hollow), John Lacki (Raceway 7), Kyle Drum (McKean), Bobby Powell (Expo), and Mike Pegher, Jr. (Raceway 7).

“I know we continue to say it, but the amount of different winners is a testament to the competitiveness of the Series,” said Northeast Co-Director Mike Leone. “If it wasn’t for a lapped car at Eriez, Tommy Snyder may have won at we’d still be looking for our first repeat winner. Along with Snyder, you have guys like Dennis Lunger, Jay Watson, Rusty Moore, Jim Frank, Steve Hollabaugh, Andy Buckley, Justin Kann, who are always competitive that still haven’t won a race. ”

Blair’s lead has shrunk to just 19 over Barton heading into Saturday and continues to lead the National Weekly Series points by five over Powell. Had Barton not missed the Touring Series opener and finished 16th or better he’d be leading the points. Following Saturday’s event, McKean County Raceway will hold the Touring Series finale for the second straight year on Friday, September 26. If Blair can finish in the top 10 at the final two events he’ll win the $5,000 title no matter what Barton does.
