Austin Dillon to make last start on Dirt at Wythe This Weekend
Childress protégé set to make first NASCAR start next week
Rural Retreat, VA (Aug-28) To anyone who is just a casual visitor to dirt tracks virtually anywhere in the southeast, chances are you have seen a black #3 pull onto the track and felt mixed emotions. To many, seeing the black #3 on the track for the first time almost registers on the resentment meter; standard equipment in all of us. As we watch the iconic image circle the track, we don’t quite know what to think. Certainly no one has ever piloted anything that’s black with a white 3 on the side of it the way the immortal Dale Earnhardt did. While the image of the black 3 has become more common at many tracks throughout the country on any given Saturday night, it’s generally not seen in a tracks top division, possibly, out of respect. Another reason could well be this: if you’re in a Late Model and the car is black with a white 3 on the doors, you had better be pretty darn good.
Whenever Earnhardt was asked, “What path do you recommend for someone who is just starting out? Earnhardt’s answer always included mention of a dirt track. Earnhardt was the grand master of driving an ill handling car. He always credited his success to the education he received on the dirt tracks.
Today’s crop of drivers in the big leagues we watch on TV most Sundays, fall apart when the tires go away, or when the sun comes out from behind the clouds, or the temperature changes etc. How about the good ole standby “we got a bad set of tires” HUH? Granted, the car of today, or tomorrow, or next week, whatever they’re calling it now, is a delicate instrument. Today, Earnhardt would dazzle us all with his ability to JUST GET IT DONE.
Enter Austin Dillon. The Welcome NC native has been under the tutelage of Richard Childress for a few years now. To those of us who have hung around the dirt tracks for longer than we care to admit, we’ve seen the transformation Dillon has made from the time his driving career began, to becoming quite the master at finding the quickest way around the track,.......any track.
This weekend, The FASTRAK Late Model Series is at Wythe Raceway for the 5th Annual Pro Late Model Nationals, an event paying $10,000 to the winner. While Dillon Racing teammates Ryan Gifford, and Ty Dillon will be on hand as well, it’s Austin Dillon many will be watching as this could well be his last start on dirt in this premier, marquee event.
Next weekend, The Nationwide Series is set to do battle in Richmond where Dillon is scheduled to make his debut on NASCAR’s junior circuit.
The FASTRAK Late Model Series has been regarded as one of the most competitive series on the planet as of late. Add to the mix, the always well prepared Wythe Raceway, $10,000 To Win, race teams from all across America, and Austin Dillon, in the black #3 making what could be his last start on dirt.
If Dillon goes on to greatness, only those in attendance at Wythe Raceway this weekend can say they saw Dillon in his last race before his NASCAR debut.
Will this FASTRAK Late Model Series event be history in the making?
One thing is certain -[B]THIS IS MUST SEE RACING
