LINCONLTON, NC - After 14 events in the 2008 racing season the inaugural ‘Countdown to the Cup Championship Series’ class has been announced, as nine drivers are still alive for the $12,500 Carolina Clash title.
The nine drivers that have earned their way in will begin the six race Championship Series on August 30th at Fayetteville Motor Speedway.
A familiar face will be leading the charge into the Championship Series as four-time and defending Carolina Clash Champion Ricky Weeks sits atop the point standings. Weeks, who has been on a tear over the last six weeks used a pair of victories over the last couple races to vault past Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin.
Franklin will enter the inaugural Championship Series just five points behind Weeks. The driver of the Barry Wright House Car has three victories on the season, which is tied with Randle Chupp for the most of any driver.
Veteran Springwood, NC driver Doug Sanders has used consistency all season long to earn his way into the Championship Series. Sanders has earned seven top ten finishes so far in 2008.
PMB Rookie of the Year contender Craig Shuffield will begin the Championship Series in fourth position. The second generation driver has been a factor in several races this season including a strong third place run at Fayetteville Motor Speedway in April.
A pair of PBM Rookie of the Year contenders enter the six race playoff style format tied for fifth. Fayetteville, NC’s Scott Neighbors and Springwood, NC’s Anthony Sanders have each had solid seasons and will be looking to make a leap forward in the coming weeks.
Dallas, NC’s Jeff Smith is also still in the hunt for his first career Carolina Clash championship. The popular third generation driver will enter the six race mini series only 90 points behind Weeks.
Former Clash champion Ed Gibbons return to full time competition has been has been a solid one. The Manning, SC native has been in contention for several wins in 2008 and will enter the Championship Series only 95 points out of the lead.
The ninth and final championship series contender is former I-20 Speedway track champion Deano Long. Long from Saluda, SC will be looking to make some noise in his Newby Racing entry.
