FASTRAK dirt late models make 1st trip to “The TAZ”
The Modern Chevrolet FASTRAK dirt late model series will make its first ever trip to the incredibly fast Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell TN. The TAZ is known as the ‘fastest 1/3 mile in the country’. With its high banked turns and straights, this is one more exciting place to race and also to watch a race. This is also one of the very last events for the FASTRAK Touring races in 08. The title partner of the series for the 2008 season is Modern Chevrolet in Winston Salem NC. Modern owns several stores in the Winston Salem area. You can purchase all of your GMPP parts along with hot rod and antique parts as well right along with the exact same engine ran in the FASTRAK late models.
“I’m excited to have FASTRAK here” said track owner Gary Hall. “We just started the crate engine late models this year and the FASTRAK weekly sanctioning has been a good program for the track and our teams. We really do look forward to the Touring series coming here”. It will be the first time a touring series with the GMPP crate engines have been at Tazewell.
FASTRAK just making its way back from Eldora Speedway in OH has created quite a fan following across the country. “It was a great race at Eldora” stated Bill Martens of General Motors Performance Parts. “Forty nine cars and it looked to me like any of the top ten cars could have won it in the end”. General Motors has been a faithful partner of the series since 2005.
FASTRAK is known as one of the most ‘fan friendly’ racing series in the country. Driver autograph session, fireworks, kids trophies and the souvenir trailer are all just some of the exciting things that FASTRAK does to get the fans involved.
Brad Hall has been the man to beat at Tazewell Speedway all year long. The track put a “bounty” on him but as of yet, no one has been able to collect. Will one of the touring teams be able to collect it? Only the people in the stands will know when it’s all said and done Saturday night. Hall also owns the current tracks record of 12.525.
Lee Cooper #57 out of Greer SC comes as the current point leader in the FASTRAK SE Regional Touring Points. Cooper won the 06 SE Touring Championship and finished 2nd in the $50,000 to win Grand Nationals in 07. John Llewellyn #90 makes his way from Knoxville TN. Llewellyn is currently second place in SE Touring points. Llewellyn has been to Tazewell this year a couple of times and it sure to be a threat to win. Llewellyn won both the Mid East and Southern Touring Regional point battles in 07. Ron Parker #8P currently third in FASTRAK SE points is from Lawndale NC and will be there doing his best to keep his current 3rd place points standings. Parker is a former Super late model and limited late model champion making this his first year in the crate engine version of the late model cars. Parker has one win under his belt coming from Carolina Speedway earlier in the year. “This is a tough bunch to win against” said Parker. “When you put good drivers together and they all have the same engine and tires, it is really hard to win. These guys are some of the best in the country. If you want to see good hard, close racing then be at a FASTRAK race. It really is ‘racing like it used to be”. Brandon Umberger #54b from Wytheville VA just got back from Eldora taking the ‘pole award” there and looking for his first FASTRAK Touring series victory.
