Need have you lost your mind or taste buds???????? Parkers has the worse grizzle filled nc barb I have ever eaten. Take it from someone who lived in gvegas for 15 years and has eaten there more times than I care to remmeber it S***S Now unfortantly they are closed but the two best barb in the state used to be in pitt co. The barbaque barn on mcgregor downs rd was the best I have ever eaten any were and the ole two brothers babrbque in in winterville was not far behind. So by default the best barbque in the state is still in pitt co. Its B"S Barbque on hwy 43 close to pitt memorial hospital.

Being from Ohio, I never heard of a pig pickin or bar b q as yall call it here. I have ate at Parkers, Bills, some joint up in Goldsboro and dont care for any of it. The thought of picking some "meat' off of a pig , turns my stomach. I do like Bill's chicken pastry, as yall call it here. Before yall bash me or say something, I have come to realize that when in Rome, you do as the Roman do. Dont mean I gotta like it!! Thank gawd for candy and ice cream or I would have lost all this weight...LOL
"Bill Ellis Barbecue" has my Vote !!! However , "Buddy's Bar-B-Que" in Fayetteville is the Best !!!

Have never had any "bad" eastern NC bbq. Back in the 60s used to eat at a little place in Coats, NC named Barefoots that no longer seems to exist. That was my intro to NC bbq, eastern style. Moving to Wilson for 10 years gave me great exposure. I liked Bill Ellis, Parkers, the original Cherry's, the defunct Godwins and Barbecue Barn (sponsor of many cars at Wilson County Speedway), Skylight in Ayden, Wilburs, Holden Lake, and a place in Roanoke Rapids whose name escapes me.
The best, however, was the barbecue prepared at pig pickins by our mechanics and shipping department staff at Blue Bell, Inc. / Wrangler Jeans in Wilson. Every year I used to take a group of these boys, led by Stanley Brantley to Darlington where they'd throw a pig pickin for the drivers and press corps at the Southern 500. The last time I saw Fireball Roberts' brother, he was wearing a "1st Annual Wrangler Southern 500 Pig Pickin" t-shirt!

Guys....all this talk of great bbq and not one mention of speedys in lexington or stameys in greensboro.....whats up with that?
as far as sauce and everything, we dont use it while cooking our que(sauce covers up the great taste of the actual smoked pork)....we do make 6 or 7 sauces for people to put on if they would like, but as a rule when we are competing we use dry rub, hickory smoke and patience(about 12/13 hrs)....we put up a small sign at our events that states" speedway bbq uses no sauce while cooking our bbq, WE HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE....YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED AT HOW MANY AGREE AFTER TASTING IT WITHOUT BEING SMOTHERED IN SAUCE....
But guys really.....no speedys or stameys......jess swicegood would be rolling over in his grave...

Mitchell's in Wilson used to have some good BBQ! I have to agree with John though, B's in Greenville is good. Parker's and Bill's are too hit or miss. One time the BBQ is just right, the next it's drier than the Sahara!

stameys back in the day(60s/70s) was very good, not speedys good but definately worth mentioning....the fact that barely a mention of any que house from lexington nc in the poll is borderline unforgivable....lexington didnt sink into high rock lake did it?

we try and go to sanctioned events kcbs(kansas city bbq society)mim (memphis in may), scba(sc bbq. association) etc...we have found that those events payout alot more and the judging done more fairly.....we have been to some that arent sanctioned and judged by celebraties and stuff(funny how the local guys, always win those types of events)...we havent been to lake gaston though,do you have any info on it ,do they have a site I can check out?We will go about anywhere within reason and if theres a dirt track close thats just a bonus....After we turn in to the judges on sat am ,we normally get the results and are loaded up by mid afternoon and are lookin for a dirt race on the way home ....we check sites regularly for new events ,but im sure we miss some......If you hear of anything up that way ,would you please forward any info....Thanks Alan

if bbq is done right there is no need to cover it up with alot of any sauce.....most guys use alot of sauce to cover up the fact that they have dried out, overcooked or under spiced the meat while cooking to begin with....if im saucing I will have a little on the plate to dip a corner of the sandwich in or something like that(as a condiment, not a main ingredient)
some of the sauces we do make and sell are cidar vinegar sauce, cherry bourbon(sweet/hot), smoked mustard sauce(made on the smoker while shoulders/hams are cooking) and a saltwater/vinegar mopping sauce...We make em, people like em,I just rarely use them on my que...pulling a nice barked piece right off the ham ,sprinkle with a little dry rub, throw on a bun with red slaw and have at it.....nothing better imo...

You have to have a taste for REAL BBQ...The thing is, don't smother it with the sauce. And that sauce should be orange (watery) vinegar based sauce..not thick Hunts BBQ sauce flavored..that's for McDonalds Nuggets. :o)

Lexington style bbq I have to vote speedys as the best, mainly because of their dip, but its not mentioned for a reason. This is a vote for the best EASTERN STYLE BBQ. Lexington style is a whole nother ball game. Personally I like both styles, but I know a lot of people who hate one or the other. You can't compare the two in the same poll though.

It’s time to vote for your favorite North Carolina barbecue restaurant. We’ve taken nominations this week. You’ve blogged and emailed more than 75 different nominations in our Best of Carolina competition. I didn’t realize we had so many great pork eateries statewide.
So please go to http://www.wral.com/lifestyles/travel/blogpost/3337130/
And Vote For Parker’s – Wilson & Greenville By Going to Bottom of the page
And Clicking on, "CLICK HERE TO VOTE!" Link and Thats Vote For Parker’s – Wilson & Greenville

I saw the red slaw on TV for the first time this weekend. Don't think I will be eating any of that. The mustard slaw at Bill's and Parker's are worse enough. Mayonaise slaw is where it's at.

Agreed Jason, I can eat red slaw on a sandwich, but I'd rather not. I never have understood how folks can eat that stuff plain. Mustard slaw can be ok if you do it right, but mayo takes the cake.

dwb.....your man at fuzzies is serving the redslaw....may be his version, but dark reddish brown juice tells me its a red slaw....
jrhoads....I love mayo slaw with my seafood and stuff, but with the bbq its got to be a vinegar based slaw(its one of red slaws main ingredients).....plus at a pig pickn you can leave the red slaw out without worrying about it spoiling as much......
Ive seen what mayo based slaw looks like coming out after its gone bad...its a gruesome site and is not easy to clean up........

think again jrhodes......pm me and ill send you a good recipe that we use for red slaw......it has to sit for a couple days to marinate in the vinegar base ,but it is real good esp with smoked bbq anything....you would be surprised at what makes it reddish in color too.....
I have never tasted a mustard slaw that I cared for too much on bbq.....
