David Smith Delivers at Tri-County in Grand Fashion
Llewellyn finishes in runner up position

BrasstownNC (Aug-2) When the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series rolled into the 1/3 mile Tri-County Racetrack near Brasstown NC this weekend, one thing was certain: with points battles tightening up, and 11 different winners in the last 11 events, tonight’s event had all the makings to be anything but ordinary. The grandstands on both the front and back stretch were virtually filled to capacity. Amazingly, anywhere around the tight 1/3 mile layout there was not a seat, race fans either brought lawn chairs, or just stood the entire night.

Many of the drivers rose to the occasion in qualifying. John Llewellyn of Knoxville TN grabbed the pole with a lightning fast lap of 14.870 seconds. David Smith of Inman SC narrowly missed the pole, circling the well prepared Tri-County Racetrack in 14.921 seconds. Athens Ga native Chad Pearson was close behind with a surprising 14.932 second lap. Brian Grumbles of Travelers Rest SC was next followed by Tri-County regulars Brian Kinnersley and Jacob Grizzle.

In each of two 12 car heat races, the top four would advance to the night’s 40 lap featured event where the winner would take home $2000.00

Grant Jordan passed leader Jason Deal with two laps to go to claim the win in the first heat race. Following Jordan across the line in second was Seth Wimpy. Chris Chandler was third and Sam Parris took the final transfer position.

Tri-County regular Jason Deal led flag to flag taking the second heat race ahead of Jacob Anderson, David McCoy and the up and coming Will Shuffler.

The last chance consolation race would see the top four positions advancing to round out the 24 car field.

Brandon Umberger continued to make his presence known on the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series by taking the victory followed by Deal, Kevin Sutton and Donnie Henry.

With 11 different winners in 11 events coming into Tri-County, clearly, the level of competition currently seen on the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series since the beginning of May, is something no other major series in the nation has been able to enjoy at any level. It’s no coincidence as to why, on this night, race fans almost completely circled the exterior of Tri-County Racetrack.

The top six redraw shuffled the top six seeing David Smith start on the pole with Chad Pearson beside him. Row two would consist of Jacob Grizzle and John Llewellyn. Brian Grumbles and Brian Kinnersley would start fifth and sixth respectfully.

Smith and Pearson would lead the field to the green flag, but early on in the event, it was clear just how critically important advancing even one position could be in the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series point standings, and the City Chevrolet Weekly Racing Division standings as well.

Contact among many drivers in the early stages of the event saw both Southeastern Touring Series points leader Lee Cooper head to the pits early for repairs as well as number two point man, Ron Parker. Both would return to complete the event, but the question would become, what kind of “hit” would each driver take in the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series point standings.

As the saying goes, sometimes, good things must end.

David Smith came home the victor here tonight ending the streak of 11 different winners in 11 consecutive races on the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series dating back to May 3rd. If the amount of congratulations the Inman SC native received from fellow drivers is an indication, Smith’s victory was not only a popular win amongst race fans, but the drivers as well.

Following Smith under the checkered flag was John Llewellyn, Jacob Grizzle, Jacob Anderson, and Brian Grumbles.

Later this week when FASTRAK releases the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series point standings, Ron Parker’s lead over John Llewellyn for the number two spot will be trimmed significantly to just 4 points.

So while the streak of different winners in consecutive races has ended, the racing continues to heat up.

With the level of competition seen this season on the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series makes it impossible to even begin to speculate who might take home the winner’s check each week:
