LINCOLNTON, NC - The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series will invade Wythe Raceway this Saturday night August 2nd for the second time in 2008.
Always a favorite stop on the series schedule, Wythe Raceway offers multiple racing grooves around the big ½ mile oval that opened in 1970. Consistently one of the most successful short tracks in the south, Wythe has long been a fan and driver favorite.
One driver who is ready for a return trip up the mountain is Springwood, NC’s Anthony Sanders. Sanders, currently sits eighth in the series standings and third in the PBM Performance Parts Rookie of the Year battle.
“The first time we went up there it was a big learning curve,” said Sanders, who operates Big A’s Custom Graphics in Spartanburg, SC. “The speeds are quite a bit higher than what I am used to but I feel like we learned a lot last time and we are looking for a strong showing this weekend.
Sanders, is in a heated battle with Fayetteville NC racers Scott Neighbors and Craig Shuffield for the PBM Rookie of the Year title. The three racers are only separated by a handful of points and Sanders feels as though the stretch run will be his strongest point of the season.
“We are going back to tracks for the second time”, said Sanders, who is in just his second year of racing. “We have been pretty consistent and had some decent runs, but now we have some notes on some tracks and we are more confident heading back, said the driver of the Hamrick’s of Gaffney, Starrette Trucking, Big A’s Custom Graphics, Clements Automotive, Barry Wright race car.
When the stars of the Carolina Clash Series rolls to town each year at Wythe there are always a strong contingent of Southern Virginia and East Tennessee racers waiting on them
Leading the ‘Carolina Bad Boys’ up the mountain will be series point’s leader Ricky Weeks. Weeks has really turned up the heat a notch in the last couple weeks with a pair of victories at Fayetteville Motor Speedway and Friendship Speedway to vault past Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin for the series points lead.
This will be the final regular season race for the Carolina Clash before heading to Virginia Motor Speedway for the USA 100 next weekend August 9th. That race is a ‘bonus points’ race. Any driver that attends will receive bonus points toward their Championship Series total.
Nine drivers are eligible for the ‘Countdown to the Cup Championship Series’. Those drivers include: Weeks, Franklin, Jeff Smith, Ed Gibbons, Doug Sanders, Neighbors, Shuffield, Anthony Sanders and Deano Long.
Six other exciting divisions will also be on hand. Pit gates open at 4:00 PM with grandstand gates opening at 5:00 PM. The Drivers Meeting will be held at 6:30.
