SATURDAY NIGHT TWO COUNTY LINE RACEWAY DRIVERS CLAIM FIRST WINS THIS SEASON
Dusty skies did not keep James Batten of Rocky Mount from clear sailing to the checkered flag in the Late Model feature for the win. Wade Ferrell, also from Rocky Mount, would take the win in Thunder & Lightning division. Michael Webb of Elm City took the win of the Pure Stock Four Cylinder class. Andy Ross from Wake Forest captured the Super Stock Four Cylinder feature. It was Ben James taking the win of the Pure Stock V-8 and Stillman Heath the victor of the Cadet class.
Starting from the pole position with a time of 16.04 around the 3/8 mile clay oval raceway, James Batten drove the KM Pulley/Danny Signs/Batten Ceramic Tiles/Battenbilt Race Engines Grandprix to the checkered flag for the win. The win was Batten’s first Late Model victory thus far this season. With 18 fast Late Model drivers lined up for the 8th Late Model feature event, it was time to rock and roll. James Batten shot to the point at the wave of the green, followed in hot pursuit by Scooter King of Rocky Mount. The first caution waved on lap four for Larry Dunn of Newsoms, VA and Roger Lucas from Benson. This was the first of ten cautions that slowed the thirty lap feature. Early in the race it was Scooter King who battled Batten, slipping only on lap nine, allowing Britches Liles to take over second. Lap 13 saw King reclaim second place, followed closely by Damon Kotke of Louisburg. While trying to maneuver past lap traffic Kotke lost control and collected Jeff Ginn and Earl Arnold. Kotke was forced to retire to the pits. King went on to finish second behind Batten. After the feature Batten stated that he had a hard week on the farm and that Lady Luck was on his side. He stated that both back tires were gone and he was glad that in the final laps King was gentle with him. After having an excellent run and a little luck on his side, J.P. Cascell took a third place finish. Bobby Bottoms of Elm City and Spencer Liggon of Lexington were fourth and fifth respectively. The remairder of the 18 car field was, Jeff Ginn -Holly Springs, Roger Lucas - Benson, Britches Liles - Bailey, Eric Hobgood - Norlina, Mike Mason - Spring Lake, Ronnie Boykin - Wilson, Earl Arnold - Morehead City, Larry Dunn - Newsoms, VA, Johnnie Edmondson - Rocky Mount, Spud Liles - Bailey, Dykes Maynard - Raleigh, Damon Kotke - Louisburg and Glen Bottoms - Elm City.
J. .P. Cascell of Nashville took the lead at the drop of the green flag of the Thunder & Lightning race. Wade Ferrell of Rocky Mount trailed the leader. As the front runners were trying to get around lap traffic, the caution waved for the fourth time for Cascell, Ballance and McDainels. Wade Ferrell of Rocky Mount then took over the number one spot. Ferrell drove his Ann’s Tanning/Coasts Vet/ E-Z Muffler Monte Carlo to his first win of the Thunder & Lightning division. Racing for the first time this season Lee Brinson from Bailey would finish second. Making a come back from the rear of the pack it would be Skeeter Liles of Bailey claiming a third place finish. Also coming back from and earlier spin it was Mark McDainels of Selma finishing fourth. Alan Worrells of Rocky Mount finished fifth out t of the 12 car field. Last weeks winner, Britches Lilies of Bailey, suffered motor problems in the heat races and was unable to start the feature.
After finishing second last week, points leader Michael Webb of Elm City lead the entire distance in the Pure Stock Four Cylinder feature event. Webb drove his Webb Plumbing/Webb Lawn Service Mustang to his second win of 2008. It was Michael against Michael with Michael Ross of Wake Forest trailing to line for a second place finish. Third place honors went to Howard Dean Rocky Mount. Finishing fourth and fifth were Taylor Dalton of Elm City and Carlton Toney of Wendell.
County Line Raceway rules state that if a driver wins 3 races in a row, the following week he is required to start in the rear of the field. That is what was required of points leader Victor May Saturday night. This is the second time it has been required by May this season. Andy Ross from Wake Forest took the lead of the feature event with Wayne Potter of Saratoga in hot pursuit. Ross and Potter could see May quickly coming up through the field of cars. May had moved up to third by lap 9 and took over second place by lap 13. Down to the checkered flag it was Andy Ross taking his Betty & Fred Williams/Dickinson Sanitation Toyota to his second win of the season. After coming from the rear Victor May of Zebulon claimed second followed to the finish line by Wayne Potter of Saratoga third, Glen Bottoms of Elm City fourth and Bill Winstead fifth. Only three cautions slowed the 20 lap feature.
Two Chevrolets lined up on the front row of the Pure Stock V-8 feature race. Ben James and last weeks winner Michael Lamm. James took the lead with Lamm challenging. It was Ben James of Battleboro that took his Bottoms Insurance Monte Carlo to the checkered flag for his second win of the season. Lamm of Battleboro, racing James down to the wire would be forced to second. Gary Whitley of Stantonsburg finished third. Jerry Williams of Snow Hill and James Merideth from Sharpsburg rounded out the top five finishers. Action was fierce in the heat races that saw the cars of David Beamon of Bailey and Ray Beamon of Lucama both lose right rear wheel and axles. Ray was side lined for the night. David would return for the feature, but with two laps remaining, he would once again loose the right rear wheel and axle.
After Saturday night, the Cadet division points battle continues. Stillman Heath of Wilson took over the points lead after claiming win number four, his third in a row. Heath drove his Jay Bird Electrical/Prime Electrical Solutions/JR’s Maintance Ford to the front of the field with only two laps remaining. Austin Holcombe of Elm City was leading, but brought out one of four cautions on lap 8. Holcombe came back to finish second. Brandon Edmomdson from Rocky Mount was third with early race leader Joshua Bryant of Wilson finishing fourth. New comer Jeremy Benson of Middlesex finished fifth. Cody Ketih and Andrew Paker rounded out the field.
County Line Raceway will be closed Saturday, August 2. Racing will resume Saturday, August 9th with Double Points Races in all divisions. Returning will be Late Models, Pure Stock Four Cylinders, Super Stock Four Cylinders, Pure Stock V-8, Thunder & Lightning and Cadets.
