ALAN WORRELLS COLLECTS FIRST THUNDER & LIGHTNING WIN AT COUNTY LINE RACEWAY
POINTS LEADERS CHANGE FOR PURE STOCK V-8 AND LATE MODEL DIVISIONS

By Joy Perry
With the race track sitting in line with the airports flight pattern, County Line Raceway provides high flying racing action. Victor May of Zebulon captured the win of the Super Stock Four Cylinder Division. Also making their way to victory circle were Alan Worrells from Rocky Mount in Thunder & Lightning, Gary Whitley of Stantonsburg for the Pure Stock V-8 class, Britches Liles from Bailey in the Late Model Division, Gary Dillon of Wilson in the Pure Stock Four Cylinder and Stillman Heath of Wilson in the Cadet Class.
Starting from the pole position was Glenn Bottoms of Elm City with Andy Ross of Wake Forest on the outside. It was Ross to the point at the wave of the green flag for the Super Stock Four Cylinder Division. That was short lived as points leader Victor May moved around Bottoms. Leader Ross suffered trouble after only two laps and was forced to the pits. That left Victor May in the Baines Paint & Body/Baines Landscaping/Summerlin Oil Camery as the leader. As the laps wore down, May paced his way through lap traffic. Following May across the finish line for a second place finish was Wayne Potter of Saratoga. Third place finisher was Jason Horne of Middlesex. Glenn Bottoms of Elm City took fourth and Bill Winstead of Bailey fifth. In the Super Stock Four Cylinder heat races earlier in the evening, Nathan Cole hit hard into the front stretch wall as the racers took the green flag. Before the leaders could get back to the start finish line, Cole had removed his helment and jumped out of his race car. Flagman Glenn Upchurch came down off the flag stand to meet with Cole and pointed out to him, that he put himself and others in danger of on coming traffic. He also informed Cole that he was not wearing his required flame retardant racing uniform. He was then informed by track management that he was disqualified from racing his feature event.
The Thunder & Lightning Division had a new winner at the conclusion of the 25 lap feature event. Starting from the outside pole position it was Allan Worrells from Rocky Mount that took the lead followed in hot pursuit by points leader "Wild Child" Britches Liles of Bailey. After the first caution, on the restart the front nose of Liles’ race car was laid back up in the air. This slowed Liles down behind the leader, but did not keep him from seeing how to drive. Worrells was quicker than greased lightning as he maneuvered his way through lap traffic and stretched his lead to the checkered flag to protect his first win of the season. Afterward Worrells wanted to thank his sponsors Quincy’s Kuztoms/Ferguson/B&B Welding & Backhoe. Liles took his ill handing race car across the line to a second place finish. Pole sitter Chris Ray of Zebulon captured a third place finish. Wade Ferrell of Rocky Mount finished Fourth. Steve Howington of Lucama in his first race this season, finished fifth.
Gary Whitley of Stantonsburg took his top notch Chevy to his fourth win in the Pure Stock V-8 Division. Whitley led all 15 laps of the feature event bringing his Top Dawg Kennels/Cherry’s BBQ/Worrell’s Used Cars sponsored Chevy to the checkered flag. With the win of the feature, Whitley took over the lead of the Pure Stock V-8 points standings. James Meredith of Sharpsburg finished second keeping hard charging Ben James of Battleboro at bay forcing him to settle for third. David Beamon of Bailey and Ray Beamon of Lucama finished fourth & fifth respectively. The event was slowed by only four cautions.
It was Late Model driver Ronnie Boykin of Wilson that parked his #36 on the pole position with a time of 15.73 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval raceway. Damon Kotke of Louisburg held the outside position with 15.77 seconds. At the wave of the green flag for the start of the race, both drivers with first class equipment quickly showed that they were here to race. It was Kotke leading the first lap. As they raced three wide, it was Kotke who stretched his lead, but on lap 17 Kotke and Boykin who brought out the caution with Kotke forced to retire to the pits for the duration of the feature. It was then "Wild Child" Britches Liles of Bailey who inherited the lead. Liles would bring his Lewis Tax Service/Creekside Lawn Service/Battleboro Produce sponsored race car around the circuit for the last 13 laps to the checkered flag for his second win of the season. Liles now takes over the Late Model points lead. James Batten of Rocky Mount had an impressive finish in second place. Scotter King of Rocky Mount fended off his uncle, J.P. Cascell, for third, with Cascell of Nashville finishing fourth. After being involved in a caution in turn three, Boykin recovered to finish fifth.
The Pure Stock Four Cylinder division ran 15 laps slowed by six cautions. Gary Dillon of Wilson lead the entire distance in the Division 7 Tatoos & Body Piercing/Williams Tree Service/Fremont Tire & Auto Toyota. Michael Webb of Elm City finished second. Jimmy Holcombe of Elm City was third. Taylor Dalton of Elm City and Michael Ross of Wake Forest were fourth and fifth respectively.
The Cadet division races for 12 laps allowing 11-15 year old drivers to gain experience. The Cadet division was slowed by six cautions. Stillman Heath of Wilson took his second win of the season bringing his Jay Bird Electrical/Prime Electrical Solutions/Mike Wall & Son Construction race car to the checkered flag. Austin Holcombe of Elm City recovered from a late race spin to finish second. Joshua Bryant of Wilson took third. Andrew Parker of Nashville and Cody Keith of Franklinton were credited with fourth and fifth.
Racing action returns to County Line Raceway on Saturday, July 19. It will be Kid’s Night which allows kids to ride in the race cars during intermission. Feature events will be Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Super Stock Four Cylinder, Pure Stock V-8, Thunder & Lightning, Cadets, and Modified Four Cylinders.

Good write up,but the part about the late model race is incorrect. Britches passed Damon for the lead before he and Ronnie crashed!
