S.M.A.R.T. Cars Race at Eastside
Jul 10, 2008
By RUSSELL SCHMIDT
Waynesboro - For the second consecutive week, the round track racing program has a special lineup, this venue with the Steelblock Mid-Atlantic Racing Tour (S.M.A.R.T.) series racers going head-to-head with many of the Eastside Speedway Late Model competitors.
The Pepsi sponsored event, coined 'Homecoming Havoc' will feature many of the series regulars such as Allen Brannon of Winchester, Gerald Davis of Delray, WV, Derick Quade of Mechanicsville, MD, Louis Timberlake of Mechanicsville, VA, Spencer Liggon of Lucama, NC along with Doug Hardy of Winchester.
The main event is scheduled for 50 laps with $1,500 being awarded to the winner.
Local driver Jared Almarode currently sits third in the S.M.A.R.T. series and fourth in the weekly Late Model standings at the Waynesboro track. Almarode will be joined by fellow local drivers, Joe Leavell, Kristian Looney, Petie Coffey, Buck Roadcap, Tommy Hoy and points leader Greg Roberson among others.
The special night’s lineup includes hot lap sessions, time trials, heats, consi’s if necessary, culminating in the 50-lap main S.M.A.R.T. event.
The S.M.A.R.T. series race car resembles the normal dirt racing Late Model, yet run a four-barrel carburetor with a maximum 750 cfm of flow. The Eastside regulars can either run their 600 cfm carbs or upgrade to a larger one for the night.
Series organizer Chris Hammer was very upbeat about the first series run at Eastside, saying, “I’ve been trying to put this together for a while now and the drivers are excited about coming to what I would call our home track. I think some of the Eastside regulars like Leavell or Roberson may have something for our guys before the night is over.”
In addition to the Late Model competition, the remaining five classes of Sportsman, Street Stock, Grocery Getter, Mini-Modified and U-CAR will also compete.
On Saturday, the pit gates open at 4 p.m. while spectators may enter the grandstand area at 5 p.m. Race fans can expect the first green feature flag to fly at 7 p.m.
Fans are reminded to arrive early and take part in the series ‘meet and greet’ on the front stretch between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in front of the main grandstand. Series drivers and their cars will be on hand for an up close and personal look at these high-speed racers.

OK I got the story...
WAYNESBORO — With a near record crowd watching Saturday night, Joe Leavell patiently worked his way into the lead with a handful of laps remaining to capture the top spot in the Steelblock Mid-Atlantic Racing Tour (S.M.A.R.T.) Late Model feature at Eastside Speedway.
"I wasn't sure I could get around Allan (Brannon)," Leavell said. "I knew it was gonna be a dogfight between me and Greg (Roberson) ... he's a heck of a driver and I just knew if I could get up there and show him a fender, it would be a dogfight from there. Once I got to the bottom, I thought I could get him from there."
Earlier in the night's program, S.M.A.R.T. series regular Brannon nailed the qualifying award with a super fast time of 18.111 in front of Greg Roberson's 18.358 and Leavell's 18.379.
Four eight-lap heats set the lineup for the 50-lap show with Brannon, Roberson, Leavell and Gerald Davis taking the checkers in each.
With five drivers coming out of each heat, six more spots were decided from a last-chance 10-lap consolation race. David Keith made a bonsai move from third on the opening lap to grab the lead as the pack entered turn 1. Keith went on to take the win in front of Lewis Timberlake, Jared Powell and Junior Humphreys.
As the green flag flew to start the S.M.A.R.T. main event, Roberson and Brannon went door-to-door before Roberson pulled ahead as the field quickly spread out. Brannon tried several times to get the measure of Roberson, but between the pressure from Leavell and a strong leader rolling off quick times, Brannon had all he could handle to maintain his runner-up position.
Lap after lap, Waynesboro's Leavell looked for a way around Brannon. The opportunity finally presented itself on lap 42 as Brannon drifted high in turn 2, opening the bottom for Leavell to zip by.
Leavell then set his sights on the top spot as Roberson's car seemed to back up just a bit. Despite the heavy traffic, Leavell made his move with four laps to go off turn 3, getting under Roberson for the lead.
Leavell quickly distanced himself from Roberson with an open track, going on to claim the $1,500 winner's share of the S.M.A.R.T. purse. Capping off the top five included Roberson, Brannon, Gerald Davis and Kristian Looney.
"We got beat on tires tonight," said Roberson. "Some guys started on new tires ... we didn't. I felt the car start to go away with about 10 to go. He (Leavell) was on a rail."
Third-place finisher Brannon of Winchester said, "It was the cautions hurting us. We ran a little harder tire on the rear right and needed more green flag time to put things together."
The Street Stock feature saw Cecil Cash jump to the front early and go on to claim his second win of the year, this one in front of Shaun Wetzel, Larry Martin, Chad Click and Kenny Gibson.
"The track was good and tacky tonight," said Cash of Amherst. "We started losing brakes with about three to go, but we made out all right."
After a couple of false starts, the Sportsman feature got underway with Jeremy Coffey jumping to the front. For most of this race, Mike Dudley tried high and low to find a way by the leader. Five caution flags didn't deter Coffey from earning his third class win of the year, this one narrowly in front of Dudley, Ricky Fox, points leader Daniel Brown Jr. and Lee Jamerson.
"We've had a few problems, but I think we have them straightened out by now," said Coffey.
Owen Adelman led from flag-to-flag in capturing his first Grocery Getter feature of the season. Adelman of Boonesville managed to hold off the advances of Tony Casady, Eric Shifflett, Tony Lam and points leader Daniel Bowden.
This week's schedule for the round track finds the second visit from the Virginia Sprint Cars alongside the six regular classes competing. They include Late Model, Sportsman, Street Stock, Grocery Getter, Mini-Modified and U-Car divisions. There will be extra money and points on the line for the U-Car and Mini-Modified divisions to help make up for their postponements from Saturday.
The first feature is slated to wave the green flag at 7 p.m. with a new pit gate opening time of 4 p.m. and spectator gates to open at 5 p.m.

I didnt think of it as an insult, and mine was just a friendly jab back at you. We all know the history and heritage of NC dirt tracks but VA tracks are a little neglected on these boards. Seems that most of the Community hails from Eastern NC.
I just like to beat the drum of the VA tracks when I get the chance...
I'm sorry if I sounded defensive :rippedhand:
