NICK WEAN CAPTURES WIN IN THE SPECIAL ARDC MIDGET FEATURE

By Joy Perry

A slight sprinkle delayed opening practice and roll-in Saturday afternoon at County Line Raceway. When racing got underway it was high flying action on the 3/8 mile clay oval raceway. The touring series of ARDC midgets saw Nick Wean of
Phillipsburg, NJ take the win, after the feature was interrupted when one of the racers took six flips in turn one. Others claiming wins were, Brandon Whitley of Elm City in the Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Andy Ross from Wake Forest the Super Stock Four Cylinder, Jerry Williams of Snow Hill in the Pure Stock V-8 Class, Britches Liles of Bailey for the Thunder & Lightning Division and Cody Keith of Franklinton in the Cadet Class.

The ARDC Midgets took to the clay oval with 17 of the machines lined up for 25 laps. The midget cars weigh approximately 500 pounds with 340 horsepower. Driven by men and women from 17 years old to mid fifties. At the wave of the green it was trouble right to start with for #46 Brent Armdt of Topton, PA , who hit hard into the third turn wall. After being checked by the Elm City EMS crew, Armdt retired to the pits. On the clean restart #99 Scott Zipp from Bridgeport, PA jumped to the lead, but the race was red flagged when Stephanie Stevens from Phillipsburg, PA tangled with others and flipped six times before coming to rest in turn one on the raceway. A pileup of the cars #29, #51, #11, #86, #75 resulted after the maylay. The Elm City EMS carefully removed Stevens from the car and placed her in the rescue squad vehicle. She was transported to Wilson Medical Center. Later in the evening an ARDC official stated that Stevens was suffering from a concussion. Stevens was held for observation, but later released. The ARDC midgets were removed from the track and resumed later in the program. At the restart with two laps showing complete, it was restart #99 Scott Zipp from Bridgeport, PA to the point with #77 Nick Wean of Phillipsburg, NJ challenging. They continued to trade positions for the duration of the feature. Wean took his first County Line Raceway win for the 2008 season. #99 Scott Zipp of Bridgeport, PA was relegated to a second place finish after giving a serious challenge. #83 Bruce Buckwater from Royersford, PA finished third. #44 Frank Polimeda of Fort Lee, NJ and Randy Monroe, Jr. of Hazelton, PA rounded out the top five finishers.

The Pure Stock Four Cylinder saw 12 cars take to the track for 10 laps with Brandon Whitley of Elm City taking his first win of the season. Slowed only by four cautions, Whitley was challenged at the line by Michael Webb of Elm City who was forced to settle for second place honors. Jimmy Holcombe of Elm City finished third. It was Nevin Twiddy of Sharpsburg finishing fourth and James Manning of Wilson fifth.

Andy Ross from Wake Forest led every lap but three to take the win of the Super Stock Four Cylinder feature event. Taking his second win of the 2008 season in his Dickinson Sanitation Toyota. According to raceway rules Victor May of Zebulon was forced to start in the rear of his feature after three straight wins. May brought his Baines Landscaping/Phase II Graphics Camery from the rear to take a second place finish. May gave Ross challenges as the laps wound down, but to no avail. Wayne Potter of Rocky Mount, Bill Winstead of Bailey, Curtis Keith of Franklinton were third through fifth respectively.

Behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile, Jerry Williams of Snow Hill captured his second win of the Pure Stock V-8 division in 2008. Williams led every lap of the feature, slowed by only three cautions. Michael Lamm from Battleboro took a second place finish. After starting from the pole position, David Beaman of Bailey garnered third. It was Gary Whitley from Stantonsburg finishing fourth and James Meredith from Stantonsburg fifth.

It was the three race rule that forced "Wild Child" Britches Liles to start from the rear of the 20 lap Thunder & Lightning Division. At the wave of the green flag it was Mark McDainels who took the lead followed by Buddy Isles Jr. . . With 4 laps complete, a caution flag flew as McDaniels was forced to the pits with a flat tire. At this point, Liles had worked his way from the rear to third. One of four cautions was brought out when Brandon Wells hit hard into the front stretch wall when he over corrected from a spin in turn four. He then slid down on the inside of the track. Isles lead for 13 of the 20 lap feature. Britches maneuvered his race car around Isles with four laps to go and brought the Battleboro Produce/Creekside Lawn Maintenance machine to the checkered flag. The win gave Liles his sixth win of the year thus far. Isles from Littleton challenged down to the finish but settled for second. Britches Liles son, 18 year old, "Skeeter Liles" followed in his father’s tracks to the checkered flag for a third place finish. Mark McDaniels made a come back to finish fourth and Wade Ferrell took fifth.

Cody Keith of Franklinton led every lap of the Cadet Division. Five cautions slowed the event. Austin Holcombe from Elm City spun in turn four of the last lap and kept going to take a second place fininsh. Last weeks winner, Stillman Heath from Wilson claimed a third place finish after spinning out on lap 4. Joshua Bryant from Wilson and Brandon Edmundson from Rocky Mount finished fourth and fifth.

The national anthem was presented by Amanda James from Battleboro, wife of Pure Stock V-8 driver, Ben James.
County Line Raceway Sat. night June 28. has the return the Late Model Division along with Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Super Stock Four Cylinder, Pure Stock V-8, Thunder & Lightning, and Cadet racing divisions.
