VIRGINA SPRINT SERIES SLIDE WITH WINGS HIGH IN THE AIR AT COUNTY LINE RACEWAY
With temptures 102 degrees plus, fans and drivers still poured into County Line Raceway for Saturday night racing action.
The Virginia Sprint Series rolled in with Billy Norfleet a Chevrolet parts manager from Blackstone, Virginia taking the win of their special 25 lap feature. Also claiming wins Saturday night were Jimmy Holcombe in the Pure Stock Four Cylinder division, Victor May in the Super Stock Four Cylinder, Gary Whitley in the Pure Stock V-8, Britches Liles in the Thunder & Lightning, Austin Holcombe in the Cadets and Justin Pinno in the Modified Four Cylinder class.
The special event of the night was The Virginia Sprint Series taking to the clay oval race track for 25 laps. The competitors travel at least a three hour distance to race the winged warriors. As the eleven car field rolled to the start of the green it was Scott Vasbinder from Mount Jaskson, Va on the pole position and Paul White of Richmond, Va on the outside. Vasbinder quickly jumped to the lead, but only for three laps. The first cation flag of three waved on lap three. On the restart it would be Peter Kingrea of Scottsdale, Va who claimed the lead and held that position for the next 16 laps. With only 6 laps to go Billy Norfleet of Blackstone, Va found his groove and slid past Kingrea to claim the lead and maintained the position to the checkered flag for the win. It was the Cheverolet parts manager first win of the season. Peter Kingrea held on to a second place finsih. Third place went to former Nascar Modfied, Winston Cup, Busch Driver, Satch Worley of Rocky Mount, Va. Rounding out the top 5 finishers were Charlie Ware of Franklin, Va fourth and Ivan Shaval of Colfax, Va fifth.
Modified Four Cylinder drivers returned to County Line Raceway for the second time this season. It was Justin Pinno following in his father’s(Jeff Pinno) footsteps, of years past to victory lane. At the wave of the green flag, it was Pinno to the point in his Mustang followed by Trevor Peoples. Pinno maitained the lead the entire 20 lap distance to the checkered flag. Pinno stated in victory circle that he wanted to thank race car builder, Steve Redding for such a good ride. That his Steve’s Corvette Shop/ O’Cools/ABCO Construction Mustang handled great. He also wanted thank his crew and his dad. Second place changed drivers three different times, with PJ Green of Fayetteville holding the position to the checkered flag. Peoples from Louisburg drove his #47 to a third place finish. The rest of the front five were Jamie Summerlin (#31) of Elm City, fourth and Russell Jones (#5) of Hope Mills Fifth.
The Cadet Division saw Austin Holcombe of Elm City, claim his second win of the season. Joshua Bryant of Wison took the lead at the start of the 12 lap feature. The feature was slowed by four cautions. Holcombe made his move to the lead on lap 5, holding off the challenges of Bryant to lap 8 as Bryant spun his Nissan off turn 4. On the restart it was Holcombe’s best friend Stillman Heath of Wilson running bumper to bumper. Holcombe held on for the last four laps to the checkered flag. Heath finished second, with Bryant coming back to claim a third place finish. Cody Keith from Franklinton was fourth and Andrew Parker from Nashville fifth. All drivers were behind the wheels of Mustangs except Bryant who was wheeling a Nissan.
Britches Liles of Bailey, NC is the King of Thunder & Lightning at County Line Raceway with 4 feature wins after Saturday nights event. When asked in victory lane, Britches stated that he wanted to thank his crew, Creekside Landscaping and Battleboro Produce for support and help. On the start of the feature, a five car pileup completely blocked turn two. Liles held a healthy lead from the restart of the race in his Chevrolet till late in the race. Four cautions slowed the 25 lap event. The tight pack of race cars had changelles amongst the top drivers. On lap 12 it was Britches son Skeeter Liles trying to work his way around his dad but to no avail. Skeeter was forced to take his Camaro across the line in second place. It was Wade Ferrell from Rocky Mount in the #61 Monte Carlo finishing third, Alan Worrells from Rocky Mount in the #28 Camaro finishing fourth and Mark McDaniels of Selma in a Pontiac taking fifth.
Ben James and Gary Whitley lined up on the front row of the Pure Stock V-8 division. It was a clean start of the 15 lap feature with Whitley and James side by side but Whitley with the advantge. Whitley of Stantonsburg took his Chevrolet to the checkered flag for his second win of the season. James from Battleboro trailed to the line for a second place finish. It was then Michael Lamm of Battleboro, Jerry Williams of Snow Hill and last weeks winner David Beaman of Bailey rounded out the top five finishers.
Victor May of Bailey took his Camrey to a flag to flag win in the Super Stock Four Cylinder race. May now sits a top the points standings with his third win of the season. With only four laps to go second place driver Andy Ross’s engine let go as the Toyoto entered turn three. Jason Horne of Middlesex took over second and followed May to the checkered flag. Bill Winstead of Bailey, Wayne Potter of Saratoga, and Runt Skinner of Black Creek were the rest of the top five finishers.
Jimmy Holcombe of Elm City would not be outdone by son Austin Holcombe, Cadet winner, as he too claimed the win of the Pure Stock Four Cylinder class. Holcombe moved from a fourth place start to the front of the field by lap 9 of the 15 lap feature. Holcombe stated in victory circle that it had been a long time since he had won. That anybody that wanted to go racing, that the winning Mustang was for sale. Gary Dillon of Wilson trailed Holcombe to the finish line for a second place finish. Third place honors went to Michael Webb of Elm City. Michael Ross from Wake Forest took fourth and Carlton Toney from Wendell finished fifth.
The National Anthem was presented Saturday night by a young group of spectators from the grandstand. They were Emily Cole of Ralegh, Courtney Ray from Zebulon, Dana Ray Smith of Bunn, and Allison Trotter of Raleigh. Thanks for a job well done.
The new Ms County Line Raceway will be crowned Saturday, June 14th. Contestants were introduced to the crowd Saturday night. Entries are Megan Whitley of Elm City, Donna Carpenter of Youngsville, Ashley Bissette of Sims, Carley Elaine Fulgham of Kenly, Casey Edmondson of Rocky Mount and Desirea Lynn Cole of Princeton.
