BOYKIN SURVIVES PROTEST TO CLAIM FIRST
LATE MODEL VICTORY

With soaring tempertures, racing action was even hotter at County Line Raceway. Ronnie Boykin of Wilson survived a protest of the cubic inch engine size and heads of his Late Model #36 ride. Despite the lateness of the night, Boykin was declared the Late Model winner. It was Boykin’s first win of the season. Also visting victory circle was Victory May in the Super Stock 4, Gary Dillon in the Pure Stock 4, Britches Liles in Thunder & Lightning, David Beaman in Pure Stock V8, and Joshua Bryant in the Cadet Divison.

The evening started off with the Super Stock Four Cylinder division touring the 3/8th mile clay surface for 20 laps. It was Victor May to the point at the wave of the green flag. May took his #35 Toyota Camary to a flag to flag win, giving him win his fourth win of the 2008 season. The event was slowed by only three cautions. Ford Mustangs seem to be the car of choice, as positions two through five were ruled by such. Trailing May to the finish line was Jason Horne of Middlesex for second and Wayne Potter of Saratoga, third. Rounding out the top five finishers were Bill Winstead of Bailey and Glenn Bottoms of Elm City.

Next out on the track were the action packed Late Model’s for 30 laps. At the wave of the green it was "Wild Child" Damon Kotke looking for a repeat win by taking the lead. As the second caution of the evening waved for Kotke suffering a blown hose, it was Britches Liles of Bailey who would enjoy the lead for the next 23 laps. Ronnie Boykin of Wilson and Scooter King of Rocky Mount were in hot pursuit of Liles. Boykin continued to close in on Liles Bumper. With two laps to go as the leaders exited turn four , Liles slowed with a flat tire, allowing Boykin to take his #36 Rocket to the lead. When the checkered flag waved it was Ronnie Boykin first and Scooter King second. As they entered the pits, King promptly filed a protest. As the rules state both car being protesed and the car that filed the postest will be checked. Track managment stated that both cars were to be checked for cubic inch engine size and the heads on the Late Model engines. Late in the evening Boykin was ruled legal and the win stood. Boykin stated in victory circle that he wanted to thank God, all his fans and especially Little Richies Restuarant of Wilson. Spencer Liggons of Lexington crossed the finish line to take a third place finish. Despite the flat tire Britches Liles was credited with a fourth place finish. Roger Lucas of Benson had flown in on the red eye from California to drive for brother Randy Lucas and took the Late Model Ford to a fifth place finish.

The Pure Stock Four Cylinder took off door handle to door handle at the wave of the green. Michael Webb of Elm City grabbed the lead over Gary Dillon of Wilson. After two laps it was Dillon who grabbed the lead and went the 15 lap distance to the checkered flag. It was Dillon’s third win of the 2008 season so far. In victory circle he thanked all his sponsors. Webb crossed the finish line to take a second place finish. The sleeper of the evening was Mike Wall of Elm City who came from the rear of the field to take the #88 to a third place finish. Wall stated after the race that due to the hot temps and not have driven for several years, he was wore out. Junior Johnson of Louisburg in the #44 Pinto and Carlton Toney of Wendell in the #2 Toyota rounded out the top five finishers.

The Thunder & Lightning 11 car field took to the track for 25 laps with Briches Liles of Bailey driving the L2 to a flag to flag win. Liles was constantly challenged by Chris Ray of Zebulon in the #R5 Camaro. Following Ray was son of Briches Liles, Skeeter Liles of Bailey. Ray and the younger Liles finished second and third. Alan Worrells of Rocky Mount drove the #28 Camaro to fourth and Mark McDaniels of Selma in a Pontiac finished fifth.

The Pure Stock V-8 division saw David Beaman of Bailey post his first win after leading the entire distance of 15 laps. Jerry Williams of Snow Hill wrestled the oldsmobole to a second place finish. Ben James of Battleboro claimed third in the # 67. James Meridth of Sharpsburg behind the wheel of the #20 Monte Carlo finished fourth and Edwin Pike of Fremont driving the #6 Chevy Impala to fifth.

In the 11-15 year old division - Cadets, the checkered flag waved for Joshua Bryant of Wilson giving him his third win of the year in his first year of racing. Bryant lead the entire distance. Stillman Heath of Wilson maintainted the second position for a second place finish but not without challenges every lap from Austin Holcombe of Elm City. It appeared, Holcombe would have a third place finish , but exiting turn 4, Holcombe spun and Cody Keith of Franklinton took the checkered flag to claim third. Last weeks winner Andrew Parker of Nashville finished fourth. Holcombe was credited with a fifth place finish.

Open practice will be held at County Line Raceway, Thursday, June 5th.

County Line Raceway plays host to the Virgina Sprint Series Sat. night June 7th. plus Modified Four Cylinders, Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Super Stock Four Cylinder, Pure Stock V-8, Thunder & Lightning, and Cadets.

All the credit should go to Joy Perry. For those that remember back in the late 80's and early 90's, she was in charge of P.R. and stories. She has rejoined us at CLR.

yall should try and get the articles published in the wilson newspaper. it would bring more attention to the line. i actually spoke to someone the other day and they heard yall had been closed for a couple of years, so that means there is still people out there that need to be reached.

I heard the same thing about two weeks ago. Someone asked me where did I go to the races at and I named CLR as one of them and they didn't know it was still open. I quickly told them to get on out there. I seen them today and they, went this past weekend and were all excited. I told them to keep going it gets even better..LOL

James, It's good to hear that Joy is back! I'm an 'Old timer' now but hope to come and see the track and new racers and the other 'oldies' soon. I can't believe Austin is already following his family's footsteps!! Time goes faster than the cars it seems ...

Take care and I enjoy being able to post. (Still learning ....)
