Allen Brannon, from Winchester, VA, passed race long leader Greg Roberson on lap 32 and led the final 9 laps to win the Steel Block Mid Atlantic Racing Tour (S.M.A.R.T.) Series opener at the Elkins Speedway. Roberson and John Tallman led the 23 car field to the green with eventual winner Brannon back in 7th .

At the drop of the green Tallman powered around Roberson in turns 1 & 2 and led going down the back straight but a spin by Jimmy Richards stopped his good run requiring a complete restart. On the next start Tallman again got another real good run on the top thru 1 & 2 and led the first lap with Roberson 2nd , Chad Green 3rd , Freddie Carpenter 4 th and Anthony Arbogast 5 th .

Brannon was 8th . On lap 2 Roberson who was working the middle of the track got by Tallman for the lead. The next lap the 2nd caution flew slowing the field when Don Woodruff looped it. At this point the lineup was Roberson, Tallman, Green, Carpenter, Arbogast, Billy Brown, Brannon, Jared Almarode, Bubby Dillman, Derick Quade, Kris Southern, Tom Harris, Spencer Liggon, Kevin Keene, John Reedy, Brad Harris, Louis Timberlake, C.J. Brown, Ted Kehrer, Joe Clutter, Mitch Miller, Richards, and Woodruff.

When the green flew Roberson immediately opened up a 6 to 8 car length lead over Tallman who had a 2 to 4 car length lead over Green with the rest of the field behind. The only mover in the top ten was Brannon who on lap 7 got by Brown and then the next lap Carpenter for 5th .

Then on lap 9 Joe Clutter who was at the tail of the field spun and brought out a caution. On this caution Arbogast went to the pits. This moved Brannon to 4 th . During this green flag period Carpenter who had slipped back to 6th slid off the top of turn 1 & 2 on lap 12 and dropped back to 12th .

This time when the green flew Brannon was all over the tail of Green who was pressuring Tallman with Roberson maintaining his 6 to 8 car length lead. Ninth place Kris Southern stopped in turn 4 on lap 16 bringing out caution #5 and stopping this battle for 2 nd . On the restart Brannon again motored off while Green dove under Tallman going into 1 with Brannon on Tallman's rear bumper.

These three raced this close until lap 20 when Brannon passed both Green and Tallman in turn's 1 & 2 and took over 2 nd . He immediately began closing the gap to Roberson. He got up behind Roberson and dove under him in turn 1 & 2 and looked to have him passed when a caution flew on lap 22.

At this point Roberson led Brannon, Tallman, Green, Almarode, Quade, Dillman, Carpenter, Brad Harris and Reedy. Roberson took off at this green but had Brannon glued to his rear bumper with Tallman and Green now battling for 3 rd and 4 th with Quade nipping at their heels. On lap 31 a wisp of smoke appeared to come from the rear of Roberson's car going down the front straight.

Then coming through turns 3 & 4 on lap 32 Roberson slowed with a flat right rear. He stopped on the front straight and went pitside, returned but was 1 lap down. Brannon now led Tallman, Quade, Green, Carpenter, Almarode, Reedy, Liggon, Timberlake and Keene. The race ran caution free for the last 9 laps.

During this period Quade got by Tallman for 2nd on the last lap while Carpenter got by Green for 4 th on lap 35. The big loser in the final laps looked to be Bubby Dillman as he was running in the top 10 with 12 laps to go and ended up a lap down in 16th spot at the finish.

At the checkered Brannon led Quade, Tallman, Carpenter, Green, Almarode, Timberlake, Reedy, Liggon and Keene. Heats to Roberson, Tom Harris, Carpenter and Green.
Notes: 23 cars from 4 states (MD, NC, VA, WV) in the pits with all 23 starting the feature. 15 cars running after 40 laps. 10 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Ted Kehrer who started 23 rd and finished 11th , a gain of 12 spots.

How about County Lines Spencer Liggons finishing 9th. Maybe at least half of those drivers will follow the SMART tour to CLR on June 14.

How about Clary's LLM last weeks feature winner Louis Timberlake picking up 7th place. Great job cant wait to have the llm back at Clary's. Wish I knew there could be enough of a commitment to have em every week.
